Denise “The Vamp DeVille” Zubizarreta is a Puerto Rican and Cuban American Mixed Media Interdisciplinary Artist raised between Union City, NJ, and Hialeah, FL, currently living and working in Denver, CO. She is the former President of the Student Government Association at the Rocky Mountain College of Art + Design where she is completing her BFA in Fine art.

Zubizarreta recently presented The Modern Borikén (an award winning paper on the Puerto Rican Statehood movement and colonizations impact on the cultural identity of the Puerto Rican people) at the HERA (Humanities Education + Research Association) Conference hosted by University of Texas – El Paso and at the RMCAD Research Symposium where it won the Quality of Paper Research award.

Her artwork focuses on her connection to self through exploring childhood angst, chronic illness, PTSD, and cultural identity. It has been exhibited in gallery and in performance with Microtheater Miami, the Fort Lauderdale Fringe Festival, Emmanuel Art Gallery, Las Laguna Gallery, RedLine, CORE New Art Space, EDGE Gallery, Cicada Magazine, and the Providence Art Club. Her ceramic and assemblage piece “One Pill At A Time” is presently included in Edge Gallery’s – The Road Less Traveled: Juried by André Lippard.

Update Interview Answers

What role do you play in your Industry?

  • I think every creative plays a massive role in our communities especially during trying times. Art can be activism, it can change the viewpoint and allow for conversations that may never have been had otherwise. I believe I’m firmly invested in that role. I want to show my community what is missing in their conversations and points of view that they may never have taken into account.

What year did you start in your industry?

  • I’ve always been a creative. I’m never sure when to draw that line but I’ve been working in the creative sector since I was in High School.

What Certifications, Degrees, Titles and Experience do you have in your industry?

  • I’m currently completing my BFA in Fine Art and will be exploring Masters and PhD programs after a break for residency.

Why & How did you get involved in your industry?

  • I felt the need to change my life. In my thirties I realized I was not passionate about my work and I wanted to feel more fulfilled. This pushed me to change everything about my life. Though I was already creating I didn’t have the confidence to truly see this as something I could do full-time. I jumped in with both feet and I haven’t looked back.

What do you love most about your role in your industry?

  • I love the freedom it brings as well as the therapy. My work is very personal and is a glimpse into my life and my struggles. I love that I found a way to share these experiences and heal from them while creating.

What is the best advice you have received about how to impact your industry?

  • Be honest! Don’t be afraid to speak the truth and to share what needs to be shared. There’s a lot going on I our modern world and being honest with yourself, others, and honest in your work bridges so many gaps.

What do you think are the top 3 things that help people excel in your industry?

  • Perseverance - Confidence - Passion

What encouragement would you give to those who are interested in being in your industry?

  • Don’t ever be afraid to share yourself through your work!

What do you think is the most important qualities for people to have in your industry?

  • A point of view - humbleness - open mindednesses

What obstacles have you overcome, or are you overcoming to excel in your industry?

  • I have ulcerative colitis and rheumatoid arthritis so some days can be extremely difficult. My illnesses sometimes take the lead on my life and it’s become intense to manage the balance between productivity and self-care.

What accomplishments are you most proud of in your life?

  • I’m proud that I changed my life in order to do something I’m so passionate about. I’m proud that I was able to see the value in working with my passions instead of filling a role in society I was told I needed to fill.

Who is is one person that has influenced your direction in life? Explain How.

  • Myself!

What advice would you give to the younger generation?

  • It gets more complicated as we go but it also gets less messy. We can see things we didn’t see before as we age and that becomes what we take solace in.

What do you want your legacy to be?

  • One of passion and strength. One of perseverance. One of personal and spiritual growth.

What else would you like people to know about you?

  • I’m a US Navy veteran and Gold Star spouse. Winner of the Rocky Mountain College of Art + Design IDEA (Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, & Accessibility) Award 2021.
