Celebrating Brandon Gamble: Champion of Black Student Success
With over 20 years in the field, Brandon has made a significant impact at various institutions, notably as a faculty scholar and director at San Diego State University’s Black Resource Center. Here, his leadership resulted in groundbreaking initiatives that transformed the academic landscape for Black students. One of his most notable achievements was securing a $1 million endowment aimed at providing crucial scholarships and career planning support.
Brandon’s journey hasn’t just been in leadership; he has also excelled as a professor and the dean of student success at Oakwood University. His innovative, data-driven approaches have markedly improved retention and graduation rates, demonstrating his belief in the potential of every student he encounters.
Beyond academia, Brandon has conducted invaluable work as a school psychologist within the Long Beach Unified School District, influencing countless students and families through his consultation and counseling efforts. This unique blend of experiences provides him with a holistic view of education and the various factors that contribute to student success.
Brandon holds a doctorate in educational psychology from the University of Southern California, a master’s degree in counseling with a school psychology specialization from San Diego State University, and a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Oakwood University. His academic background is equally matched by his dedication to mentoring students and actively participating in professional service.
So, what can we expect from the newly established Office of Black Student Success? According to Brandon, the office will be a beacon of support for Black students at CSUSB. “We will lead programs, events, and provide services focused on success, retention, and graduation,” he explained. These services will include advising, peer mentoring, and invaluable connections to campus resources such as financial aid and academic support.
Brandon’s vision extends to promoting well-being, empowerment, and cultural enrichment through collaboration with various campus partners, including the Black Faculty, Staff and Student Association, counseling services, and career centers. Additionally, community partners and alumni will play a crucial role in enhancing the career development of students as they progress through their studies.
“We are confident that Dr. Gamble will positively influence our community,” stated Paz Olivérez, vice president of Student Affairs. “His passion and leadership are exactly what our university needs to support the holistic development of our Black student community.”
