Celebrating Wanda Reid: A Local Beacon of Creativity and Knowledge

Wanda Reid has been a guiding light in our community, merging her love for horticulture, education, and art into an inspiring career that touches both the land and hearts around her. With extensive knowledge in fields ranging from early childhood education to the intricate botanical science behind herbs, Wanda’s journey is one of continuous growth and deep-rooted passion.

From Gardens to Classroom: A Pathway of Impact

Wanda’s professional journey began in the quiet cradle of her first garden, among the whispering scents of herbs. She found joy in exploring how these natural elements could harmonize with art, leading her down the path to soap making using essential oils. The blend of art and science became the core of her work, allowing her a canvas not only to innovate but also to educate and inspire future generations.

A Heart for Art and Service

“The combination of art and science in my work is perfect,” explains Wanda. “It allows me not just to create but also to nurture both nature itself and those around me.” Her approach centers on holistic growth—cultivating an environment where flora and fauna thrive alongside human creativity and understanding. Through her soaps and educational outreach, she shares this harmonious coexistence.

Legacy of Learning

A fervent advocate for lifelong learning, Wanda believes knowledge forms the essence of her influence. She supports cultivating skills, wisdom, and, most importantly, love for people and the planet. Encouraging others, especially youth, she advises, “Always read, learn, and be curious. We are born to create, and nurturing your unique creativity should be the foundation of your dreams.”

Her legacy, deeply intertwined with personal and professional fulfillment, emphasizes the quiet power of dedicated impact—one life at a time.

Why Did You Start My Black City?

A MESSAGE FROM BRANDON BORNES (FOUNDER OF MY BLACK CITY)

We often worry that we don’t have enough resources in our community to go around. When we see someone in our community doing what we do but better, we get a little nervous or intimidated. Instead of using competition to spur on our creativity, teamwork, work ethic and innovation, we become soo overwhelmed with our own fears and insecurities that we gossip, sabotage, or hurt one another. This has happened to many exceptional people in our community. We need to do better and lead by example. Our love for each other needs to be greater than our fear of failure.

If we had to simplify into one word what My Black City is about, it would be LOVE! Because Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails.

When people come in contact with our brand, that’s what I want them to experience. It‘s not an easy aspiration to live up to, but we believe it‘s worth fighting for and it‘s what we need as a community.
