Celebrating Tres Hodgens: The Heartbeat of Our Community

In the vibrant world of music, few figures shine as brightly as Tres Hodgens. Known for his dynamic presence in the local hip hop scene, Tres brings not just rhythm but a sense of community and passion to every performance. As host of the monthly event Beats & Bars: Live Hip Hop Sessions at Felix’s BBQ With Soul, Tres isn’t just a performer; he’s a connector, an educator, and a passion-fueled artist dedicated to elevating his community through the power of music.

With a love for music that began at the tender age of five, Tres’s journey in drumming started in Oceanside, California. It was there, during his formative years at Faith Temple Christian Center, that he discovered the spiritual and communal power of music. His drumming career blossomed across various houses of worship and eventually found a home at Redeemer Presbyterian Church in Encinitas. It was through these experiences that he learned how to engage audiences and draw them into the moment.

“I bring my full personhood to the instrument,” Tres says, blending elements of hip hop, jazz, soul, and funk into his performances. He has mastered playing drums while emceeing and DJing—creating unforgettable live music experiences. For Tres, it’s more than just entertainment; it’s a form of connection that highlights the shared human experience. “Looking out into the audience and seeing how what I’m doing resonates—that’s what I live for,” he shares.

In addition to performing, Tres is devoted to teaching. He regularly conducts classes on mobile music production techniques, showing aspiring musicians how to harness the power of technology to create their own music. “The software and apps available today can match anything produced in home studios,” he explains, encouraging students and young musicians to explore new avenues for creativity. Visit his website at sojournalistmedia.com for more information on his classes.

Tres’s journey hasn’t been without challenges. Early on, he lost one band gig for not fitting stylistically, but the experience only fueled his desire to grow artistically. “Being versatile and understanding different methods of music is invaluable,” he reflects. This adaptability not only enhances his skills but also allows him to build lasting relationships within the music community.

Inspired by his “brother from another mother,” Jason—founder of Tres’s old rap crew Future Shock—he learned the importance of creativity and artistic integrity. “If you’re passionate about something, pursue it,” Tres advises younger generations eager to make their mark. He dreams of leaving a legacy where he is remembered as a good dad and husband who created amazing art and loved deeply.

Tres Hodgens is a beacon of creativity, embodying the heart of our community through music. Whether at Felix’s BBQ or in the classroom, his impact will undoubtedly be felt by generations to come. Join him in celebrating the artistry of music and the power it has to unite us all.

Why Did You Start My Black City?

A MESSAGE FROM BRANDON BORNES (FOUNDER OF MY BLACK CITY)

We often worry that we don’t have enough resources in our community to go around. When we see someone in our community doing what we do but better, we get a little nervous or intimidated. Instead of using competition to spur on our creativity, teamwork, work ethic and innovation, we become soo overwhelmed with our own fears and insecurities that we gossip, sabotage, or hurt one another. This has happened to many exceptional people in our community. We need to do better and lead by example. Our love for each other needs to be greater than our fear of failure.

If we had to simplify into one word what My Black City is about, it would be LOVE! Because Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails.

When people come in contact with our brand, that’s what I want them to experience. It‘s not an easy aspiration to live up to, but we believe it‘s worth fighting for and it‘s what we need as a community.
