Celebrating Stacie Watkins: Rolling Toward Inclusion and Confidence

Stacie Watkins is a visionary in the San Diego community, recognized for founding Black Skate San Diego. Since its launch on August 6, 2021, Stacie has dedicated her energy to creating an inclusive environment that celebrates roller skating within the black and brown communities, fostering confidence, mental health, and a strong communal spirit.

Stacie emphasizes,

“Roller skating helps with confidence and mental health, giving the younger generation positive role models and showing them the range of activities available beyond traditional sports.”

The inspiration to start and lead Black Skate San Diego came from a personal quest to bond with her child and a realization of the lack of representation in roller skating. Under her guidance, what began as small meetups has blossomed into a significant community presence, drawing newcomers and experienced skaters alike.

Stacie prides herself on guiding beginners through their first uncertain slides to achieving their skating goals. “Teaching someone to skate and watching them evolve is profoundly rewarding,” she says.

Three key lessons Stacie advocates in roller skating:

  1. Embrace falls as part of the learning process.
  2. Avoid comparisons; focus on your personal journey.
  3. Consistency is crucial – keep skating!

For those aspiring to join the skating world, Stacie advises,

“Believe in yourself, take risks, and don’t delay action out of fear of failure. Anything is possible for those who are open and fearless.”

Furthermore, Stacie cherishes the impact of inclusion her group has fostered and is excited about how much they’ve grown – “I’m proud of our consistency and the commitment of our members and volunteers,” she reflects.

Outside the rink, Stacie’s creativity extends to sewing and painting, showcasing her multifaceted talents. Whether it’s her artistic skills or her dynamic roller skating community, Stacie Watkins continues to inspire and lead with heart.

Her final piece of advice for the youth echoes her approach to life:

“Put down your phone, pick up a hobby, and learn to love yourself. Life will align itself.”

Why Did You Start My Black City?

A MESSAGE FROM BRANDON BORNES (FOUNDER OF MY BLACK CITY)

We often worry that we don’t have enough resources in our community to go around. When we see someone in our community doing what we do but better, we get a little nervous or intimidated. Instead of using competition to spur on our creativity, teamwork, work ethic and innovation, we become soo overwhelmed with our own fears and insecurities that we gossip, sabotage, or hurt one another. This has happened to many exceptional people in our community. We need to do better and lead by example. Our love for each other needs to be greater than our fear of failure.

If we had to simplify into one word what My Black City is about, it would be LOVE! Because Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails.

When people come in contact with our brand, that’s what I want them to experience. It‘s not an easy aspiration to live up to, but we believe it‘s worth fighting for and it‘s what we need as a community.
