Samuel Giszpenc: A Path of Growth and Faith

Today, we are spotlighting Samuel Giszpenc, an inspiring individual who has built a unique path for himself, filled with growth, resilience, and faith. Samuel, a resident of the 91331 zip code, has a story that many high schoolers and middle schoolers can relate to—a journey of overcoming struggles and discovering newfound strength through community and spirituality.

Samuel’s connection to the Mariners Church in Oceanside is one that holds deep personal meaning. “Me and my mom got baptized at this church,” Samuel recalls. “I feel like this church is really inspiring me to do better in life.” Through his involvement with the church, Samuel has felt the support and encouragement to tackle life’s challenges—especially when it comes to his reading comprehension, which he admits has been a personal struggle.

This struggle, however, is what has driven Samuel to seek out growth, and he has found the right environment for that at Mariners Church. “I got into Bible study, and I felt like this could improve my reading skills and develop my relationships with other people,” he shares. Samuel’s spiritual journey has not only helped him deepen his connection to his faith, but it has also provided him with the tools to build a stronger sense of self and community.

Growing up in Los Angeles, Samuel’s life wasn’t always easy, but he found joy in basketball. He played throughout his high school years, using the sport as an outlet and a source of motivation. After high school, he took a significant step in his education by pursuing graphic design at Santa Barbara College, where he earned his associate’s degree. The friends he made during his time there only further strengthened his sense of community and purpose.

Now settled in San Diego, Samuel is carving a new path for himself. “I’m really starting to carve a new journey for myself,” he says, referring to both his professional and personal growth. Like many young adults, he’s realizing that life is about constantly evolving and finding new ways to impact those around you in a positive way.

One of Samuel’s most profound pieces of advice for his younger self resonates with anyone who has ever struggled with learning: “When I was 10, I wish I would have gotten better at comprehending my reading.” It’s advice that speaks volumes about perseverance and how important it is to never give up on oneself, even when the road is tough.

Samuel’s favorite Bible verse reflects his dedication to growing and uplifting others. Hebrews 10:24-25 states, “Let us consider how to spur one another on to love and good deeds. Let us not neglect meeting together, as some have made a habit, but let us encourage one another.” This verse not only embodies Samuel’s personal journey but also his hopes for the community.

As for the legacy Samuel hopes to leave behind? He keeps it humble yet powerful: “I want to be remembered as a good person to people.” In a world that can sometimes feel overwhelming, this simple yet noble goal is a reminder to all of us that kindness and community can make all the difference.

Why Did You Start My Black City?

A MESSAGE FROM BRANDON BORNES (FOUNDER OF MY BLACK CITY)

We often worry that we don’t have enough resources in our community to go around. When we see someone in our community doing what we do but better, we get a little nervous or intimidated. Instead of using competition to spur on our creativity, teamwork, work ethic and innovation, we become soo overwhelmed with our own fears and insecurities that we gossip, sabotage, or hurt one another. This has happened to many exceptional people in our community. We need to do better and lead by example. Our love for each other needs to be greater than our fear of failure.

If we had to simplify into one word what My Black City is about, it would be LOVE! Because Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails.

When people come in contact with our brand, that’s what I want them to experience. It‘s not an easy aspiration to live up to, but we believe it‘s worth fighting for and it‘s what we need as a community.
