Celebrating Ollis Mozon: A Voice of Faith and Storytelling in Our Community
Ollis’s commitment to his faith is evident in everything he does. After a commendable career culminating in a retirement as an O-6 Navy Chaplain, Ollis has dedicated himself to furthering the mission of the church and sharing the rich tapestry of Black narratives. His creative expression in orality has uniquely positioned him to connect with people from all walks of life, bridging gaps and fostering understanding through the power of storytelling.
Being a dedicated parent and spouse, Ollis recognizes the importance of nurturing not only his family but the broader community as well. His greatest strengths—integrity, joy, and the ability to listen—have allowed him to impact those around him positively. In a community that values connection and support, Ollis exemplifies the spirit of faithfulness, which he identifies as his core value during this season of life. He continuously strives to exhibit this virtue, inspiring others to do the same.
Ollis is particularly passionate about expanding biblical teaching among oral people groups. He believes in creating opportunities for individuals to engage with their faith in meaningful ways, which is crucial for community growth and development. However, he acknowledges that funding for safe international travel remains a pressing professional need as he works to share his message beyond local boundaries.
In recognizing the strengths of the local Black community, Ollis points to its resilience, creativity, and profound depth of experience. Yet, he stresses that there is still room for development in areas such as effective mentorship and resource-sharing, which could empower young individuals to thrive.
Ollis’s ambition to give back to the community is commendable. He actively participates in organizations like Black Storytellers SD and the National Association of Black Storytellers, where he not only shares his work but also uplifts the voices of others, encouraging them to spark conversation and connection through their own stories. His belief in the power of storytelling to bridge divides resonates deeply, reminding us all of our shared humanity.
As Ollis Mozon continues his journey, we celebrate his dedication to ministry, storytelling, and community building. Students in middle and high school can find inspiration in his story, learning the importance of faithfulness, integrity, and the transformative power of words. Today, let us honor Ollis’s contributions and encourage each other to engage in storytelling, compassion, and connection within our community.
