Courage to Connect: Celebrating Kristi Harlig

In a world that sometimes feels divided, Kristi Harlig stands out as a beacon of hope, kindness, and tenacity. Born on November 29, 1964, Kristi has dedicated her life to transforming the educational landscape and uplifting the voices of African American students and families. As she transitions from her role as a public school counselor to an independent education consultant, she embodies the spirit of connection and support that our community needs.

For over two decades, Kristi has nurtured young minds, guiding countless students toward their post-secondary dreams. Although she is proud of her journey in public education, she sees this next chapter as an opportunity to expand her reach and influence. “I want to assist students and families in navigating the often-intimidating college application process,” she explains. Kristi knows firsthand the challenges that come with higher education, especially for students of color. Her goal is to ensure they not only succeed but thrive.

Kristi’s commitment to self-love and community wellness shines through every facet of her work. Whether she’s knitting a new creation—or knitting together relationships in her community—her passion for connection is clear. Those who know Kristi describe her as compassionate, reliable, and an innovative problem-solver, qualities that have undeniably helped her make an impact within her industry.

One of Kristi’s most admirable attributes is her strong sense of integrity. She believes that honesty in discussions about education is essential for creating positive change. “The greatest strength of our local Black community is our collective talents and the desire to connect and support one another,” she notes. Yet, she also sees areas in need of development, particularly in advocating for the unique challenges faced by African American students in schools. Kristi passionately advocates for changes that encourage inclusivity and awareness within educational institutions.

As part of her mission, Kristi is actively engaged with several organizations, including the National Association for College Admission Counseling (NACAC) and the American School Counselors Association (ASCA). Her presence in these communities allows her to strengthen her understanding of the resources available for students and families and engage in important conversations about equity in education.

Looking forward, Kristi hopes to cultivate a successful business grounded in community support and strong relationships. She recognizes the challenges of transitioning from public education to entrepreneurship, but her resilience is inspiring. With an unwavering commitment to health and wellness, coupled with the values of family and connection, Kristi is determined to make her vision a reality.

The best way Kristi believes she can give back to her community is through the experience she has gained over the years. She aims to empower others with knowledge and resources, ensuring they are equipped to navigate a system that often overlooks their needs. “Our students deserve to be seen, heard, and celebrated,” she emphasizes. As we spotlight Kristi Harlig, we are reminded that change is not just possible; it is happening right here in our community, one student at a time.

Why Did You Start My Black City?

A MESSAGE FROM BRANDON BORNES (FOUNDER OF MY BLACK CITY)

We often worry that we don’t have enough resources in our community to go around. When we see someone in our community doing what we do but better, we get a little nervous or intimidated. Instead of using competition to spur on our creativity, teamwork, work ethic and innovation, we become soo overwhelmed with our own fears and insecurities that we gossip, sabotage, or hurt one another. This has happened to many exceptional people in our community. We need to do better and lead by example. Our love for each other needs to be greater than our fear of failure.

If we had to simplify into one word what My Black City is about, it would be LOVE! Because Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails.

When people come in contact with our brand, that’s what I want them to experience. It‘s not an easy aspiration to live up to, but we believe it‘s worth fighting for and it‘s what we need as a community.
