In a world where young voices are often overlooked, Kirin Roberts is a shining example of determination and creativity. At just nine years old, he has already made a significant impact on our community with his business, Kirin + Co, specializing in handmade soy candles, wax melts, and soaps. Kirin’s entrepreneurial journey began during a family vacation when he discovered a passion for crafting candles, igniting a flame that has only grown since then. Kirin’s dedication to his craft is evident in the unique scents he creates, designed to make people smile and elevate any space. “I love creating unique scents that people enjoy smelling,” he shares. “Candles have a way of making a room smell great, and I like knowing my candles and wax melts are what people reach for to relax or set a mood.” With the support of his family, Kirin has transformed what started as a hobby into a thriving small business, all from the comfort of his home. As a young entrepreneur, Kirin serves as a leader and inspiration for other kids in the community, encouraging them to explore their own business ventures. “I just want to say thank you for the support I’ve received so far, and I hope it continues in the future,” he expresses. His advice for other aspiring entrepreneurs is straightforward: “Research what you want to do, practice it over and over, master it, market it, and sell it.” This guidance not only reflects his commitment to his craft but also underscores the importance of perseverance. Despite juggling school, sports, and his business, Kirin remains focused and driven. He recognizes the challenges that come with being a young entrepreneur, saying, “It’s a big challenge when I have other priorities as well.” Yet, he continues to push through, reminding himself and others that “success doesn’t happen overnight.” His resilience is a crucial quality for anyone looking to excel in business. What sets Kirin apart is not just his talent for creating beautiful products but also his emphasis on customer service. “Customer service is key,” he notes. He understands that a great product is only part of the equation; the way customers are treated makes all the difference in building a successful brand. Looking to the future, Kirin hopes to leave a legacy that inspires others to try new things and embrace their creativity. “I want to show that age doesn’t matter when it comes to pursuing your dreams,” he says. “Don’t stop—keep going.” This simple yet powerful message is a testament to his character and is sure to resonate with many in the younger generation. Why Did You Start My Black City?

A MESSAGE FROM BRANDON BORNES (FOUNDER OF MY BLACK CITY)

We often worry that we don’t have enough resources in our community to go around. When we see someone in our community doing what we do but better, we get a little nervous or intimidated. Instead of using competition to spur on our creativity, teamwork, work ethic and innovation, we become soo overwhelmed with our own fears and insecurities that we gossip, sabotage, or hurt one another. This has happened to many exceptional people in our community. We need to do better and lead by example. Our love for each other needs to be greater than our fear of failure.

If we had to simplify into one word what My Black City is about, it would be LOVE! Because Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails.

When people come in contact with our brand, that’s what I want them to experience. It‘s not an easy aspiration to live up to, but we believe it‘s worth fighting for and it‘s what we need as a community.
