Celebrating Kewana Coleman: A Beacon of Faith and Community Spirit

In our vibrant community, there are individuals whose contributions shine like beacons of light. One such person is Kewana Coleman, a passionate member of Walker Chapel AME Church and a dedicated professional making waves in the dental industry. Her journey is not just about career achievements; it’s about nurturing connections, encouraging others, and instilling values that uplift everyone around her.

Kewana began her spiritual journey at a young age, immersing herself in the teachings and values of her local church. She previously held several significant roles, acting as a youth director, teaching Sunday School, and leading as the Women of Faith president. These experiences cultivated her love for service and the community, which she continues to embody today as a proud member of the Walker Chapel AME Church choir and the 3MC travel choir. Music, she believes, is a powerful tool for connecting with others and expressing faith.

In addition to her spiritual endeavors, Kewana is a registered dental assistant, where she serves as the lead in her workplace. Her professional life is filled with responsibilities that include hiring and training new staff, creating a supportive environment for her team, and reaching out to the local community college to find qualified new hires. Kewana’s work doesn’t just impact the dental field; it influences young people who are interested in pursuing similar careers. She believes that by providing mentorship and guidance, she is planting seeds for the future.

If Kewana could offer advice to her younger self, it would be simple yet profound: “Don’t care what people think and try everything. Stay in shape and eat right. Never stop praying and always grow in the Lord.” These words reflect not only her personal growth but also her understanding of the challenges faced by today’s youth.

When asked about her favorite Bible verse, Kewana enthusiastically shares, “For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind” (2 Timothy 1:7). This verse resonates deeply with her, serving as a constant reminder to live boldly and encourage others to do the same.

Kewana’s message to the next generation is clear and powerful: “Be kind, be grateful, speak love and positivity to people. Better yourself with education of some kind. Help another person or persons up.” She emphasizes that kindness and education go hand-in-hand in building stronger communities and shaping brighter futures.

As Kewana continues to uplift her community through her musical talents and professional expertise, she stands as an inspiring example of what it means to lead with faith and compassion. Her story reminds us that one person can indeed make a difference, and it encourages us all to reflect on the impact we can have within our families, workplaces, and spiritual communities.

Let us celebrate Kewana Coleman, not just for what she has accomplished but for how she inspires those around her to aim higher and lead with love.

Why Did You Start My Black City?

A MESSAGE FROM BRANDON BORNES (FOUNDER OF MY BLACK CITY)

We often worry that we don’t have enough resources in our community to go around. When we see someone in our community doing what we do but better, we get a little nervous or intimidated. Instead of using competition to spur on our creativity, teamwork, work ethic and innovation, we become soo overwhelmed with our own fears and insecurities that we gossip, sabotage, or hurt one another. This has happened to many exceptional people in our community. We need to do better and lead by example. Our love for each other needs to be greater than our fear of failure.

If we had to simplify into one word what My Black City is about, it would be LOVE! Because Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails.

When people come in contact with our brand, that’s what I want them to experience. It‘s not an easy aspiration to live up to, but we believe it‘s worth fighting for and it‘s what we need as a community.
