Celebrating Denise Roberts: A Beacon of Sustainable Creativity

In a world where environmental challenges are ever-present, one local leader stands out as a beacon of hope and creativity. Denise Roberts, the Sustainability Director of Rekreative Art Consultancy, has dedicated the last seven years to merging art with environmental responsibility. Her innovative approach to sustainability and her commitment to empowering artists make her a remarkable figure in our community. Denise’s journey began with her father, a recycled artist from the 1970s who saw potential beauty in discarded materials long before sustainability became fashionable. Inspired by his passion and the realization that he never had the opportunity to fully explore his craft, Denise set out to change the narrative for artists working with recycled and upcycled materials. Through Rekreative Art Consultancy, she has created a thriving platform where creativity meets environmental responsibility. “What I love most about my role in the sustainable art industry is the people and their stories,” Denise shares. Each artist she collaborates with brings a unique vision and passion that enriches the cultural landscape. By forging strategic partnerships and advocating for global cultural exchange, she has made significant strides in promoting sustainability in the arts. Denise emphasizes the importance of pursuing passions, and her own journey is a testimony to that. She believes that the future lies in embracing curiosity and encouraging young artists to explore creatively. “Creativity is not just about aesthetics; it’s a powerful tool for problem-solving and storytelling,” she explains. “The next generation can shape the future through their art.” Over the years, Denise has faced challenges, but her determination has only fueled her success. She is proud of her accomplishments, particularly the impactful projects that have emerged from her collaborations with local artists and organizations. By providing training, mentorship, and necessary resources, she aims to ensure that sustainable art becomes a viable and respected movement in the community. “The legacy I want to leave behind is a community where artists receive the support they need to thrive,” Denise reflects. Her vision includes establishing a training school focused on teaching artists how to creatively use recycled materials. This initiative would empower future generations to learn the skills necessary to express their creativity responsibly. As a young artist herself, Denise emphasizes the importance of taking risks and stepping outside one’s comfort zone. “Experiment, reflect, and create with whatever you have at hand,” she advises. “The world needs your unique perspectives, and your art can make a difference.” Denise Roberts is more than just a role model; she is a driving force behind sustainable art in our community. With her passion and guidance, she continues to inspire countless others to explore their creative journeys. We celebrate Denise’s achievements and the positive impact she has had on the world around her. As you venture into your artistic pursuits, remember the words of Denise: “Embrace your creativity and never stop expressing what makes you unique.” Together, we can champion a brighter, more sustainable future through art.

Why Did You Start My Black City?

A MESSAGE FROM BRANDON BORNES (FOUNDER OF MY BLACK CITY)

We often worry that we don’t have enough resources in our community to go around. When we see someone in our community doing what we do but better, we get a little nervous or intimidated. Instead of using competition to spur on our creativity, teamwork, work ethic and innovation, we become soo overwhelmed with our own fears and insecurities that we gossip, sabotage, or hurt one another. This has happened to many exceptional people in our community. We need to do better and lead by example. Our love for each other needs to be greater than our fear of failure.

If we had to simplify into one word what My Black City is about, it would be LOVE! Because Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails.

When people come in contact with our brand, that’s what I want them to experience. It‘s not an easy aspiration to live up to, but we believe it‘s worth fighting for and it‘s what we need as a community.
