Raised in sunny San Diego, California, Cynthia always had a passion for education. After earning her bachelor’s degree from National University (NU) in 1988, she embarked on a journey that would lead her to significant roles in higher education. As a student activities coordinator at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD), Cynthia was known for her innovative ideas and unwavering advocacy for student rights and needs. She firmly believes that education can ignite change, stating, “Getting my degree from National University changed the trajectory of my life.”
Throughout her career, Cynthia engaged with various communities, both locally and internationally. Her roles, including Director of Educational Programs at The Carter Center and Associate Dean of Student Services at MiraCosta, showcase her dedication to enriching the lives of students not just within the classroom but also through outreach and community relations. She has also traveled to countries like Costa Rica, Ghana, and Japan, expanding her perspective and understanding of global educational dynamics.
Cynthia’s contributions extend well beyond her titles. In 2019, she was honored with the City of Oceanside’s Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Community Service Award, a testament to her relentless commitment to community service. “Cynthia is an exceptional leader who is determined to make a difference in the lives of young people,” said MiraCosta College Superintendent/President Sunita “Sunny” Cooke. Her impact is felt throughout Oceanside, where she volunteers her time with various organizations, advocating for affordable higher education and equity.
Her leadership and dedication have left a lasting impression on both students and colleagues. Known for her extraordinary ability to connect with people, Cynthia is a visionary who helps individuals recognize their strengths and seize opportunities for growth. She has been an ambassador for numerous initiatives aimed at increasing educational access, especially for those who feel marginalized or overlooked.
As a retired leader and role model for students in middle and high school, Cynthia continues to offer invaluable advice: “Stay the course because a degree can profoundly change the trajectory of your life.” She embodies the idea that hard work, passion, and a commitment to helping others can lead to a fulfilling career and a meaningful life.
