Meet Charles Barnett – A Devoted Shepherd to Both Church and Community

Charles Barnett, a dedicated resident of Oceanside’s 92083 area, has been a guiding light for both Mariners Church and his local community for decades. As a Shepherding Elder and a life group leader at Mariners Church, Barnett has devoted his time, energy, and heart toward nurturing the spiritual growth of others.

“I’ve been walking with Christ for decades,” Barnett shares. “And I’m still in awe of His mercy, grace, and goodness.” His awe for God was deepened during his studies at Grand Canyon University, where Barnett majored in Theology. He credits his faith journey for shaping him into the compassionate and wise leader he is today.

Barnett’s roots in Oceanside and service at Mariners continue to reflect his lifelong calling: walking with Christ and guiding others along the same path. His connection to his church goes beyond simple attendance; it resonates through his commitment to uplifting and mentoring individuals in his life group, as well as leading the Shepherding Elders.

Before retiring, Barnett had an impactful career spanning 33 years at Target Corporation. As an Assistant Manager, Barnett was known for overseeing Guest Services and improving store operations. He implemented service improvements and enhanced in-stock accuracy and efficiency, all in an effort to make a better customer experience. His colleagues often praised his leadership ability and attention to the well-being of his team, both traits drawn from his deep spiritual foundation.

When asked what advice he would give his younger self, Barnett responded thoughtfully: “Seek the Lord at an earlier age and choose your friends wisely.” Even in simple advice, his words are a reflection of his steady faith and understanding of life’s true priorities.

Barnett’s favorite Bible verse is profoundly personal and reflects the way he lives his life: Deuteronomy 10:12, which reads, “What does the Lord your God ask of you but to fear the Lord your God, to walk in obedience to him, to love him, to serve the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul.”

This verse captures the essence of Barnett’s mission in life—walking in obedience to God, serving Him with everything he has, and loving those around him without condition. It’s a guiding principle that has shaped both his career in business and his extensive service to his church and community.

As for the legacy he hopes to leave behind, Barnett’s heart echoes a powerful simplicity: “A legacy of serving our Lord with all my heart, soul, mind, and strength… serving others through imitating Christ’s character.” For Barnett, it doesn’t matter where someone is from or their status—he hopes to always exemplify God’s love, leaving a lasting impact based on grace and servant leadership.

To the youth in our community, Barnett’s story is a powerful reminder that in both career and faith, serving well and loving others is the deepest measure of success. Charles Barnett may have retired from his professional role, but his role as a faithful servant and inspiring figure within our community is as strong as ever.

We celebrate Charles Barnett for his steadfast dedication to faith, family, and service. His life is a testimony that walking with Christ, no matter the season or circumstance, bears a legacy that will inspire generations to come.

Why Did You Start My Black City?

A MESSAGE FROM BRANDON BORNES (FOUNDER OF MY BLACK CITY)

We often worry that we don’t have enough resources in our community to go around. When we see someone in our community doing what we do but better, we get a little nervous or intimidated. Instead of using competition to spur on our creativity, teamwork, work ethic and innovation, we become soo overwhelmed with our own fears and insecurities that we gossip, sabotage, or hurt one another. This has happened to many exceptional people in our community. We need to do better and lead by example. Our love for each other needs to be greater than our fear of failure.

If we had to simplify into one word what My Black City is about, it would be LOVE! Because Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails.

When people come in contact with our brand, that’s what I want them to experience. It‘s not an easy aspiration to live up to, but we believe it‘s worth fighting for and it‘s what we need as a community.
