Celebrating Brenna Walker-Osuegbu: A Fierce Advocate for Change and Kindness

Meet Brenna Walker-Osuegbu, a figure of strength and enduring kindness in our community. As a devoted mother, wife, and business owner, her role extends beyond her personal achievements to influential moves that have caused significant ripples of change in Fallbrook and Bonsall since her arrival in 2021.

Brenna is a staunch advocate for her children and, by extension, all children in our school system, especially those from African-American backgrounds. Her fierce protection of their rights and dignity stems from firsthand experiences where she felt that the educational materials and staff interactions were not only outdated but discriminatory.

She recounts troubling times when her son faced maltreatment at school by a teacher and received unhelpful advice from a superintendent suggesting a transfer to a “more diverse” school. Disheartened yet undeterred, Brenna also challenged the high school curriculum, which included derogatory language within so-called educational materials.

“My focal point was the lack of positive portrayal of African Americans’ extraordinary contributions. I took a stand not only for my child but for all African American students still to come.”

Not only has Brenna fought for a more respectful and enlightening educational atmosphere, but her business philosophy also revolves around treating individuals with supreme kindness and respect, which she believes is reciprocated manifold.

Brenna’s story is not just about the challenges; it’s about overcoming them. It’s a call to all parents and community members who feel marginalized to speak up and demand better. As she supports the next generation, her resolve strengthens with every step she takes towards creating a community that values every member equally.

In her journey, Brenna has been more than just a business owner or a troubled parent; she’s been a beacon of hope and an unwavering force advocating for a world filled with kindness and equality.

Why Did You Start My Black City?

A MESSAGE FROM BRANDON BORNES (FOUNDER OF MY BLACK CITY)

We often worry that we don’t have enough resources in our community to go around. When we see someone in our community doing what we do but better, we get a little nervous or intimidated. Instead of using competition to spur on our creativity, teamwork, work ethic and innovation, we become soo overwhelmed with our own fears and insecurities that we gossip, sabotage, or hurt one another. This has happened to many exceptional people in our community. We need to do better and lead by example. Our love for each other needs to be greater than our fear of failure.

If we had to simplify into one word what My Black City is about, it would be LOVE! Because Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails.

When people come in contact with our brand, that’s what I want them to experience. It‘s not an easy aspiration to live up to, but we believe it‘s worth fighting for and it‘s what we need as a community.
