Yusef Miller: A Catalyst for Change in Our Community

In a world fraught with inequality and injustice, few stand out as beacons of hope and leadership. Yusef Miller, the Executive Director of the North County Equity and Justice Coalition and Activist San Diego, epitomizes what it means to be a dedicated community advocate. Since 2011, he has tirelessly worked towards addressing issues of equity, justice, and awareness, impacting countless lives along the way.

Raised with a strong sense of purpose and integrity, Yusef emphasizes that “God is still working on all of us,” a humble reminder that everyone has the power to grow and change. This philosophy drives him in his pursuit of justice and motivates him to acknowledge his own imperfections. “I will make mistakes,” he says, “but I hope to pivot towards the correct and just positions if/when I stumble.”

Following 24 years of active duty service, Yusef transitioned into community activism, discovering a powerful voice he could lend to the grassroots movements striving for change. His journey became transformative after the founding of the North County Equity and Justice Coalition in 2020, focusing on critical campaigns such as Saving Lives in Custody. He uses his invaluable skills in communication, public speaking, and strategic planning to cultivate trust and confidence within the community.

One of Yusef’s most remarkable accomplishments is being instrumental in the passing of California bills SB519 and AB268, aimed at reducing unnecessary in-custody deaths. But his passion lies not solely in legislation; it’s also in the genuine connections he forms with individuals, impacting lives through direct outreach and dialogue. “The impacts that serve my soul are the ones that change individual lives,” he comments, echoing his deeper commitment to social justice.

Yusef’s journey is not without challenges. Overcoming setbacks, disappointments, and the often harsh realities of advocacy shapes his resolve. He believes that dedication is the key quality needed in the fight for justice and emphasizes the importance of “showing up” in all facets of life. “Your mental strength will be tested, but showing up will strengthen it,” he advises youth who seek to engage and make a difference.

For younger generations, his guidance is simple yet profound: “Couple the energy of youth with the wisdom of strategy.” He encourages them to be patient, as meaningful change doesn’t happen overnight. In a world that often prioritizes instant gratification, Yusef stands as a testament to the virtues of resilience and commitment to long-term goals.

He draws inspiration from historical figures such as Frederick Douglass, admiring his multifaceted contributions to society. “To be just in the pursuit of justice, and fair in the pursuit of fairness,” is the legacy Yusef hopes to leave behind, a legacy rooted in authentic commitment and selflessness.

Yusef Miller is more than just a leader; he is a symbol of hope and action. Let us celebrate his efforts and be inspired to partake in our own community-building efforts. After all, every act of kindness or advocacy, no matter how small, contributes to the larger tapestry of change.

Why Did You Start My Black City?

A MESSAGE FROM BRANDON BORNES (FOUNDER OF MY BLACK CITY)

We often worry that we don’t have enough resources in our community to go around. When we see someone in our community doing what we do but better, we get a little nervous or intimidated. Instead of using competition to spur on our creativity, teamwork, work ethic and innovation, we become soo overwhelmed with our own fears and insecurities that we gossip, sabotage, or hurt one another. This has happened to many exceptional people in our community. We need to do better and lead by example. Our love for each other needs to be greater than our fear of failure.

If we had to simplify into one word what My Black City is about, it would be LOVE! Because Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails.

When people come in contact with our brand, that’s what I want them to experience. It‘s not an easy aspiration to live up to, but we believe it‘s worth fighting for and it‘s what we need as a community.
