Spotlight on an Extraordinary Student: Jamie Lee

In a world where every day brings new challenges, it can be easy to blend into the background of high school life. Yet, Jamie Lee, a sophomore at Lincoln High, stands out not just for her remarkable academic achievements but also for her unwavering spirit of service and creativity. This month, we celebrate Jamie, a student who redefines what it means to be a leader and a friend!

At just 16, Jamie has become a beacon of positivity within her school community. She’s the president of the Student Council, where she has initiated several initiatives to promote student well-being, inclusiveness, and school spirit. “I believe that everyone should feel like they belong,” Jamie says with a bright smile. Her commitment to creating a more inclusive environment led her to launch the “Every Voice Matters” program, which encourages students from diverse backgrounds to share their stories and experiences.

But Jamie’s contributions don’t stop at school advocacy. She is also an avid volunteer at the local animal shelter, where she spends her Saturdays caring for the animals and helping to find them loving homes. “Animals have a special way of teaching us about compassion,” she reflects. Jamie’s affinity for animals has inspired her peers to join in, and she has organized several community service days focused on animal welfare, bringing together students from different grades to make a meaningful impact.

In addition to her activism, Jamie is a talented artist who loves to express herself through painting. Her artwork often reflects themes of nature and community, showcasing her passion for both. This year, she presented her art at the school’s annual talent show, enchanting audiences with her creativity. “Art has always been my escape, my way of connecting with the world,” she shares. Jamie dreams of pursuing a career in environmental science, hoping to combine her love for art and nature into something that can inspire others.

Her determination doesn’t go unnoticed. “Jamie is not just a leader; she’s a friend,” says her classmate, Sarah Thompson. “She always takes the time to listen and cares about everyone’s ideas.” Jamie’s kindness and dedication have inspired many other students to take initiative and make a difference in their own way, creating a ripple effect of positive change in the community.

As we recognize Jamie Lee for her incredible contributions to Lincoln High and the community, we are reminded of the powerful impact one individual can have. She exemplifies the idea that leadership isn’t about position but about action and influence. Jamie’s journey is just beginning, and we can’t wait to see the heights she will reach and the lives she will continue to touch. Keep shining, Jamie!

Why Did You Start My Black City?

A MESSAGE FROM BRANDON BORNES (FOUNDER OF MY BLACK CITY)

We often worry that we don’t have enough resources in our community to go around. When we see someone in our community doing what we do but better, we get a little nervous or intimidated. Instead of using competition to spur on our creativity, teamwork, work ethic and innovation, we become soo overwhelmed with our own fears and insecurities that we gossip, sabotage, or hurt one another. This has happened to many exceptional people in our community. We need to do better and lead by example. Our love for each other needs to be greater than our fear of failure.

If we had to simplify into one word what My Black City is about, it would be LOVE! Because Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails.

When people come in contact with our brand, that’s what I want them to experience. It‘s not an easy aspiration to live up to, but we believe it‘s worth fighting for and it‘s what we need as a community.
