Celebrating Tinesia Conwright: A Beacon of Empowerment

Tinesia Conwright is not just a name in our community; she’s a force of nature. Born and raised in the heart of Southeastern San Diego during the turbulent 1980s and 90s, Tinesia faced challenges that would have discouraged many. Growing up amid gang violence and poverty, she discovered a powerful tool for change: dance. Through a youth group called The Steps of Praise, Tinesia found her passion and a sense of belonging, realizing that even young people could effect social change.

Motivated by her experiences, Tinesia launched the nonprofit organization, Depositing Empowerment Through Outreach & Urban Redevelopment (DETOUR), in 2009. With a mission to uplift underserved girls, DETOUR has empowered over 1,000 young women through its innovative programs, including the FANCY (Focused And Naturally Confident Youth) Teen Girls Expo and Leadership Academy. Tinesia’s work focuses on providing educational and employment opportunities, fostering self-confidence, and encouraging personal development for girls of color in grades 6-12.

Tinesia’s journey is not just inspirational; it’s transformative. Her own upbringing, in which she witnessed the struggles faced by her foster sister Tatiana, fueled her desire to create a more equitable world for girls like them. With DETOUR, she has built a platform where young women can thrive, graduate high school, and pursue higher education. Remarkably, since 2016, 100% of the participants in the Leadership Academy have been accepted into four-year universities, with many majoring in STEAM fields—an incredible feat to celebrate.

In addition to her role as the Executive Director of DETOUR, Tinesia has a remarkable academic background. She holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Public Administration from San Diego State University and a Master’s in Nonprofit Management & Leadership from the University of San Diego. Her professional background complements her passion, as she currently serves as the Youth Workforce Development Program Manager for the San Diego Housing Commission.

But Tinesia doesn’t stop there. She is a community advocate and board member on various organizations focused on elevating voices and creating pathways for youth. She has received numerous accolades, including the RISE San Diego Women in Civil Rights Award and a nomination for the 79th District’s Assembly-member Dr. Shirley Weber 2014 Women of the Year Award. These awards are a testament to her relentless dedication to service and empowerment.

Additionally, Tinesia recently authored “Find Your Flair!”, a guide for young individuals to discover their leadership attributes and build resilience. Her energy and commitment to her community inspire countless girls to believe in themselves and follow their dreams.

Tinesia reminds us that change begins at the grassroots level. As a devoted foster parent, wife, and community leader, her life is a testament to resilience, passion, and love. With each girl she empowers, Tinesia is shaping the future, proving that with the right support and encouragement, anything is possible. Let us celebrate her achievements and the bright futures she continues to ignite in our community.

Why Did You Start My Black City?

A MESSAGE FROM BRANDON BORNES (FOUNDER OF MY BLACK CITY)

We often worry that we don’t have enough resources in our community to go around. When we see someone in our community doing what we do but better, we get a little nervous or intimidated. Instead of using competition to spur on our creativity, teamwork, work ethic and innovation, we become soo overwhelmed with our own fears and insecurities that we gossip, sabotage, or hurt one another. This has happened to many exceptional people in our community. We need to do better and lead by example. Our love for each other needs to be greater than our fear of failure.

If we had to simplify into one word what My Black City is about, it would be LOVE! Because Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails.

When people come in contact with our brand, that’s what I want them to experience. It‘s not an easy aspiration to live up to, but we believe it‘s worth fighting for and it‘s what we need as a community.
