Meet Terrell Rackley: A Beacon of Hope in Horticulture

In a world constantly evolving, there are individuals who steadfastly hold onto their roots while also branching out, inspiring those around them. Terrell Rackley is one such individual, a health advocate and community leader who has been influencing his industry since 2009 through his deep connection to flora and horticulture. Terrell believes that his impact is as profound and expansive as the tree that stands tall in the heart of every neighborhood, providing strength, comfort, and reach. With the mantra of being the change he wants to see, Terrell’s journey began from a simple yet powerful desire: to uplift his community through health advocacy. His experience in horticulture allows him to weave nature and wellness together, showing that the two can coexist and thrive. “I love the direct impact and direct contact with the people within the community,” he shares, emphasizing the importance of connection and understanding in his role.

Terrell’s achievements are a testament to his dedication. He emphasizes three key elements that have helped him excel: hard work, consistency, and authenticity. “Never stop dreaming, believing, giving, or receiving,” is the wise advice that has guided him, reminding us all that growth is a continuous journey. His resilience shines bright even in challenging times, such as the waning excitement for crafts and the frequent changes in community interaction.

One of Terrell’s most profound accomplishments is fatherhood. He speaks highly of his mother’s influence, recalling how her positive outlook shaped his perspective on life. “She has an uncanny knack of seeing the positive in everything.” This insight resonates deeply with students who are navigating their own paths—especially as they face the pressures and uncertainties of today’s world.

For young people looking to establish their footprint in their own communities, Terrell has simple yet profound advice: “Let light lead your way and be you.” Empathy, he believes, is essential. “Empathy with standards as strong as your boundaries,” he asserts, reminding us that while caring for others is crucial, it should never come at the expense of our values.

As he looks to the future, Terrell hopes to leave behind a legacy defined by tenacity, genuine care, and humility. “I live to make memories until I become one,” he muses, reflecting on the importance of creating lasting impacts. His journey exemplifies how vibrant and interconnected our lives can be when we embrace our passions and strive for growth.

So next time you see a tree blossoming in your community, remember Terrell Rackley—a man whose roots run deep and branches reach high, inviting everyone to join him in celebrating life, health, and community impact.

Why Did You Start My Black City?

A MESSAGE FROM BRANDON BORNES (FOUNDER OF MY BLACK CITY)

We often worry that we don’t have enough resources in our community to go around. When we see someone in our community doing what we do but better, we get a little nervous or intimidated. Instead of using competition to spur on our creativity, teamwork, work ethic and innovation, we become soo overwhelmed with our own fears and insecurities that we gossip, sabotage, or hurt one another. This has happened to many exceptional people in our community. We need to do better and lead by example. Our love for each other needs to be greater than our fear of failure.

If we had to simplify into one word what My Black City is about, it would be LOVE! Because Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails.

When people come in contact with our brand, that’s what I want them to experience. It‘s not an easy aspiration to live up to, but we believe it‘s worth fighting for and it‘s what we need as a community.
