No parent wants to hear their child has a terminal illness, and there is no cure.

I am a member of the Church of Christ located in Ruleville, MS. I am the mother of 9 (6 boys and 3 girls) children, which 6 are living. I buried 2 stillborn baby boys in 2005 and 2006. In 2013, my eldest son Ja’Marcus Davon Davis was diagnosed with stage IV hepatocellular carcinoma (liver cancer). Unfortunately in 2014, my son won his battle with cancer through death. I am a 1st grade assistant teacher at Webster Street Elementary School in Yazoo City, MS. I became a published author in 2018. I wrote a book about my son’s spiritual journey with cancer to encourage and help grieving parents on how to cope with the illness and/or death of a child. I enjoy abstract painting and blogging. I created my own blog website to help women on mental health. I struggle with anxiety and I have learned several ways to cope with my illness.

What role do you play in your Industry?
  • I am a writer/published author and upcoming blogger.

What year did you start in your industry?

  • I became a published author in 2018.

What Certifications, Degrees, Titles and Experience do you have in your industry?

  • The title of my book is My Son Has Cancer: A Mother's Courage to Hold God's Hand During the Storm.

Why & How did you get involved in your industry?

  • I decided to become a published author to share my son's story with the world (and I was successful). People afar reached out to us in via prayer and with encouraging words. There are a countless number of parents who grieve in silence, which is not healthy. They feel helpless and many suffer in silence since they do not know how to deal with the pain they feel inwardly. Having an ill child and burying a child who never saw daylight is no walk in the park. My story has helped many individuals refocus on Christ and His wonderful works. I got involved in the writing profession because I love writing. After I wrote my book, I contacted a Facebook friend who is a published author. She assisted me in publishing my book. I didn't know how I was going to published my book, but God has a way of placing people in your life. You may not know why you met at the moment, but with time, God will reveal the purpose.

What do you love most about your role in your industry?

  • I love writing and blogging (new passion) because it is a great way to encourage/inspire those who seek and need motivation. I love touching hearts, minds, and souls and seeing one take God's hand, embrace His word, and walk firmer with Him.

What is the best advice you have received about how to impact your industry?

  • I have gotten so much positive feedback from my book, until I have been encouraged to write another book. Life has taken me in multiple directions since my son's death. My second book will shine light on "life after the death of my children."

What do you think are the top 3 things that help people excel in your industry?

  • The top 3 things that help people excel in writing is: 1. Knowing what to write and ensure the information that is written is credible (non-fiction). 2. Targeting the correct audience. 3. Have a great support system.

What encouragement would you give to those who are interested in being in your industry?

  • I would encourage those who are interested in being a published author to pursue their goal. Put your thoughts on paper and just write.

What do you think is the most important qualities for people to have in your industry?

  • The most important qualities a published author should possess is ensuring their audience cannot put their book down regardless of how long it is. When I write, I write to keep my audience's attention with every word.

What obstacles have you overcome, or are you overcoming to excel in your industry?

  • I continue to write regardless of my trials and tribulations. I've overcome the death of my aunt who was like a mother, yet I continue to put my emotions on paper. Writing is my passion, and nothing will stop me from reaching my readers.

What accomplishments are you most proud of in your life?

  • I am proud to be a published author, upcoming blogger, an assistant teacher, a mother, and a wife, but most of all I am proud to be a member of The Lord's body (Church of Christ). My Christianity is my greatest accomplishments in life, for God is with me when I am physically alone.

Who is is one person that has influenced your direction in life? Explain How.

  • Some people never meet their hero, I gave birth to mine! My son, Ja'Marcus Davon Davis has influenced my life in every aspect of my life. God blessed me to birth a child who changed my life...FOREVER!

What advice would you give to the younger generation?

  • I would tell the younger generation to stay in school and follow your dreams. Do not settle for less and always set high standards for themselves.

What do you want your legacy to be?

  • My legacy will defiantly be, I lived to advocate liver cancer awareness for my child. My dream is to start a cancer foundation in honor of my son. He battled a cancer with no cure, and with that in mind; I continue and will always fight for him.

What else would you like people to know about you?

  • I am working on a website, Jewel of Wisdom. I am creating this website to help inspire those who lack inspiration. My website will discuss a variety of topics such as; death, grief, meditation, and wisdom, just to mention a few issues. My goal is to motivate others. www.jewelofwisdom.org (coming soon)
