Celebrating Shawntae Mitchum: A Champion of Equity and Empowerment

In a world filled with currents of change and the urgent need for social justice, one local figure stands out as a beacon of hope and determination: Shawntae Mitchum. Nominated by an anonymous community member, Shawntae is an inspiring mother, dedicated educator, and a Ph.D. candidate in Sociology at the University of Southern California (USC). Her journey through academia and activism showcases an unwavering commitment to fighting anti-Blackness and advocating for equity in higher education.

Born and raised in California, Shawntae pursued her passion for sociology at California State University San Marcos, where she earned both her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees. Through her academic pursuits, she developed a keen interest in the dynamics of race and ethnicity, the effects of student activism, and state violence. Shawntae’s groundbreaking research focuses on the transformative impact of the 2020 racial uprisings on Black educators working in diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) efforts.

Shawntae’s work extends beyond research; she is actively involved in designing and delivering training programs aimed at dismantling systemic racism in educational institutions. At MiraCosta College, she co-created the first campus-based Black Community Ally Training, leading over 200 faculty and staff members in meaningful discussions about allyship and anti-Black racism. Her efforts have positioned her as a leading voice for change in the community, demonstrating how education can be a powerful tool for advocacy.

As a mother of two, Shawntae’s motivation is deeply personal. She hopes that her contributions will create a better world for her children, one where they can flourish without the burden of racism or discrimination. Her commitment to her family mirrors her dedication to her research and community engagement. When she’s not busy advocating for equity, Shawntae cherishes biking on the beach and binge-watching Netflix shows with her kids—simple joys that remind her of the importance of balance in her life.

In recognition of her achievements, Shawntae has received numerous accolades, including the “Salute to Women of Color” from the NAACP and the “Woman of the Year” award from the San Diego Chapter of the American Association for Women in Community Colleges. These honors highlight her impactful contributions to the communities she serves, marking her as not only a scholar but also a leader.

Shawntae’s teaching philosophy extends far beyond the traditional classroom. As an associate instructor, she fosters an inclusive environment where students are encouraged to engage critically with sociological concepts. Her unique approach ensures that her students leave her classroom not just with knowledge, but with a passion for social change.

Shawntae Mitchum stands as a powerful example for high schoolers and middle schoolers alike. Her unwavering courage, dedication to justice, and commitment to empowering the next generation serve as inspiration for all. As Audre Lorde said, “I am deliberate & afraid of nothing,” and through her tireless work, Shawntae embodies this sentiment, paving the way for a brighter future for her community and beyond.

Why Did You Start My Black City?

A MESSAGE FROM BRANDON BORNES (FOUNDER OF MY BLACK CITY)

We often worry that we don’t have enough resources in our community to go around. When we see someone in our community doing what we do but better, we get a little nervous or intimidated. Instead of using competition to spur on our creativity, teamwork, work ethic and innovation, we become soo overwhelmed with our own fears and insecurities that we gossip, sabotage, or hurt one another. This has happened to many exceptional people in our community. We need to do better and lead by example. Our love for each other needs to be greater than our fear of failure.

If we had to simplify into one word what My Black City is about, it would be LOVE! Because Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails.

When people come in contact with our brand, that’s what I want them to experience. It‘s not an easy aspiration to live up to, but we believe it‘s worth fighting for and it‘s what we need as a community.
