Celebrating Community Champion: Shavona Holmes

Meet Shavona Holmes, a beacon of hope in the world of holistic health and wellness. As the founder and owner of a thriving practice dedicated to natural healing, Shavona has made a profound impact on her community since opening her doors in October 2020, amid the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic. Now, as she celebrates her four-year anniversary, it’s time to shine a spotlight on her journey and the transformative work she does. With an earnest commitment to advocating for families during one of their most life-changing moments, Shavona is currently training to become a doula. Her goal? To provide essential support, education, and empowerment to those in need. “I am passionate about what I do because I operate in a unique space where my expertise sets me apart,” she explains. “As one of the few providers offering specialized services like yoni steaming, my mission is to promote wellness and reduce painful menstrual symptoms.”Shavona’s journey into this field began with her own quest for healing. Experiencing the benefits of steaming herself ignited a passion to share this natural remedy with others. “I realized that many individuals could benefit just as profoundly from all-natural treatments,” she reflects. Through her work, she has managed to create a space where individuals can learn, connect, and heal together. “Healing is not a solitary path; it’s one we walk together,” she emphasizes. With an unwavering belief in the power of knowledge, Shavona insists that educating the community is crucial to dispelling uncertainty surrounding holistic health. “Knowledge is key; by sharing information, we can inspire confidence in natural healing options,” she shares. Her determination to empower others has been a guiding principle throughout her journey.Despite the hurdles she has faced as a business owner, including navigating the uncertainties of the pandemic, Shavona has displayed remarkable resilience. Her accomplishments, such as being listed in Marquis Who’s Who and receiving the BBB Award for Ethics in solo entrepreneurship, are testaments to her hard work and dedication. “Starting a business is a journey filled with challenges, but I believe in dusting myself off and trying again,” she encourages.

Shavona’s drive to make a difference is inspired by her role model, her mother, who taught her the values of hard work and the invaluable impact a small business can have on the community. “Don’t be discouraged if friends and family don’t support you; often, it’s strangers who become your greatest allies,” she advises the younger generation. Her message is clear: stay true to your passions, seek out knowledge, and connect with your community.

As Shavona looks to the future, she hopes to leave behind a legacy of empowerment, helping families thrive through holistic practices. “I aspire for generations to benefit from a more natural approach to health and well-being,” she shares with pride. In a world where challenges often abound, Shavona Holmes stands as a shining example of how one person can impact their community with knowledge, care, and an unwavering spirit.

Why Did You Start My Black City?

A MESSAGE FROM BRANDON BORNES (FOUNDER OF MY BLACK CITY)

We often worry that we don’t have enough resources in our community to go around. When we see someone in our community doing what we do but better, we get a little nervous or intimidated. Instead of using competition to spur on our creativity, teamwork, work ethic and innovation, we become soo overwhelmed with our own fears and insecurities that we gossip, sabotage, or hurt one another. This has happened to many exceptional people in our community. We need to do better and lead by example. Our love for each other needs to be greater than our fear of failure.

If we had to simplify into one word what My Black City is about, it would be LOVE! Because Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails.

When people come in contact with our brand, that’s what I want them to experience. It‘s not an easy aspiration to live up to, but we believe it‘s worth fighting for and it‘s what we need as a community.
