Celebrating Sharel Gordon-Love: A Community Gem

In our bustling community, we are fortunate to be surrounded by individuals who shine brightly and inspire others. One such luminary is Sharel Gordon-Love, a celebrated author, writer, publisher, screenwriter, and community advocate whose journey is nothing short of remarkable.Sharel’s roots are rich with wisdom, as she fondly recalls her childhood spent listening to her grandmothers and aunts share stories brimming with life lessons. “I love our elders! They dropped pearls of wisdom that I couldn’t wait to fully understand,” Sharel expresses. It’s this appreciation for knowledge and storytelling that laid the foundation for her lifelong love of writing.

Since publishing her first book in 2001, Sharel has dedicated herself to nurturing the dreams of aspiring writers through her work as a publisher. “It’s such a privilege to help others realize their goals,” she explains, beaming with passion for her craft. But her commitment to her community extends beyond publishing; she serves in her local church, blessing youth and women with her time and resources, embodying the spirit of service she learned from her family.

Sharel’s journey has not been without challenges. As a two-time cancer survivor, she faced obstacles that tested her resolve. “The disease hindered my life tremendously,” she shares reflectively. Yet, overcoming these trials only deepened her desire to give back. “What I love most about my role in my industry and community is that I get to help others,” she adds with unwavering conviction.

Her advice for those looking to make an impact is practical yet profound: “Stay focused, be consistent, and don’t give up,” she advises. She encourages young people to reach out to like-minded individuals, network, and don’t hesitate to ask for help in their journey. “There’s always someone willing to assist you,” Sharel reassures.

The most important quality for success in her eyes? Social skills. “A listening ear is critical,” she emphasizes. “If you listen to respond, you can’t truly help.” It’s evident that Sharel’s dedication to fostering connections is at the heart of her mission, both as a writer and community member.

Among her proudest accomplishments are her three sons and her foray into screenwriting, fulfilling a lifelong dream of writing a movie. “Being able to pay it forward through publishing is a blessing,” she shares joyfully, hinting at her hopes to leave a legacy of love and service behind, encouraging future generations to cherish those who have gone before them.

As Sharel says, “Listen to your elders, those that have been where you are trying to go.” Words of wisdom from a true community gem. Let us celebrate Sharel Gordon-Love not just for her accomplishments but for the love and genuine care she pours into everything she does.

Why Did You Start My Black City?

A MESSAGE FROM BRANDON BORNES (FOUNDER OF MY BLACK CITY)

We often worry that we don’t have enough resources in our community to go around. When we see someone in our community doing what we do but better, we get a little nervous or intimidated. Instead of using competition to spur on our creativity, teamwork, work ethic and innovation, we become soo overwhelmed with our own fears and insecurities that we gossip, sabotage, or hurt one another. This has happened to many exceptional people in our community. We need to do better and lead by example. Our love for each other needs to be greater than our fear of failure.

If we had to simplify into one word what My Black City is about, it would be LOVE! Because Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails.

When people come in contact with our brand, that’s what I want them to experience. It‘s not an easy aspiration to live up to, but we believe it‘s worth fighting for and it‘s what we need as a community.
