What year did you start in your industry?
- I first started officially in 2021, but I have served an informal coach outside of my business for the last several years.
What Certifications, Degrees, Titles and Experience do you have in your industry?
- I have a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology, a Master of Arts in Higher Education and am a current Ph.D Candidate who will finalize my degree 2022. I have worked in student affairs (residence life, diversity and inclusion, academic advising, crisis intervention and support, etc) for the last ten years. Additionally I have experience in educational policy, education tech, and curriculum and learning.
Why & How did you get involved in your industry?
- I have always been the person my community comes to fo support and guidance. While working to identify what freedom and peace looked like for me, I recognized my skill and talent and decided to work for myself serving the communities I know and love!
What do you love most about your role in your industry?
- I love building relationships with powerful and dedicated women. I love helping women recognize that their struggle does not define them. By working with Black women, I continue to learn to love and give grace to myself as I support my clients to do the same.
What is the best advice you have received about how to impact your industry?
- Support like this is invaluable. However, you (the client) has to be ready to make a change.
What do you think are the top 3 things that help people excel in your industry?
- Confidence in what you bring to the table and a recognition and honoring of how you've made significant change in your life. Doing your own healing work. I think life coaches/therapists that do not have their own therapist or mental health professional can and often do cause more harm to those they wish to help. Balancing empathy with client accountability.
What encouragement would you give to those who are interested in being in your industry?
- Get you a team. This job is not for the weak-minded. You can do it, but make sure you have people in your corner!
What do you think is the most important qualities for people to have in your industry?
- Self-awareness, tenacity, and courage.
What obstacles have you overcome, or are you overcoming to excel in your industry?
- The biggest obstacle is my own mind and self-doubt. While I am my biggest fan, I am my own worst critic. I am aware of this and work intentionally to overcome this daily!
