Celebrating Shala Waines: A Community Empowerment Champion

In the vibrant city of San Diego, one individual stands out as a beacon of hope and inspiration for aspiring entrepreneurs and community members alike. Meet Shala Waines, a dynamic leader who is not only the founder and CEO of the Soul Swapmeet but also a passionate advocate for black entrepreneurship and community empowerment.Born on March 7, 1984, Shala has always felt a deep calling to make a positive impact in her community. As a parent, she understands the importance of fostering an environment where businesses can thrive, particularly in underserved areas. Her journey began with the establishment of the Soul Swapmeet, a bustling marketplace that provides black entrepreneurs with a platform to showcase their goods and connect with customers.

Shala believes that community engagement is the key to unlocking potential. Her tireless efforts to promote black businesses have created a ripple effect, empowering hundreds of local entrepreneurs to pursue their dreams and strengthen their economic footing. “I have a passion to provide a supportive foundation to my community,” she shares, highlighting her desire to ensure that everyone has access to opportunities for growth.

Shala’s work is not just about profits; it’s about building a sense of belonging and encouragement. She states, “The greatest strengths of our local black community lie in the support we provide for one another.” This principle is exemplified in her initiatives that aim to uplift and celebrate achievements within the community.

One of Shala’s proudest professional achievements came when she graced the front page of the business section in the Union Tribune. This recognition is not just a personal milestone; it serves as a testament to the hard work and resilience of the black community that she advocates for.

Despite her successes, Shala remains grounded and committed to improving her skills and capabilities. “Financial growth is an area I want to develop personally,” she admits. Professionally, she recognizes the need for capital to expand her impact further. “Having events that have no fee for vendors is one way I can give back,” she states, underlining her focus on accessibility and inclusion.

As Shala looks ahead, her vision is clear: to cultivate a stronger network of support for the local black community. By working together, she believes that they can advocate for greater resources and assistance from higher-ups, fostering an environment where every business can flourish.

Why Did You Start My Black City?

A MESSAGE FROM BRANDON BORNES (FOUNDER OF MY BLACK CITY)

We often worry that we don’t have enough resources in our community to go around. When we see someone in our community doing what we do but better, we get a little nervous or intimidated. Instead of using competition to spur on our creativity, teamwork, work ethic and innovation, we become soo overwhelmed with our own fears and insecurities that we gossip, sabotage, or hurt one another. This has happened to many exceptional people in our community. We need to do better and lead by example. Our love for each other needs to be greater than our fear of failure.

If we had to simplify into one word what My Black City is about, it would be LOVE! Because Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails.

When people come in contact with our brand, that’s what I want them to experience. It‘s not an easy aspiration to live up to, but we believe it‘s worth fighting for and it‘s what we need as a community.
