Celebrating Sabrya Mosley: A Rising Star in Our Community

In the heart of Oceanside, one young woman is making waves not just with her voice, but through her tireless dedication to her community and fellow students. Meet Sabrya Mosley, a spirited musician and passionate advocate for education and cultural identity, who has been nominated by an anonymous community member for her outstanding contributions.

Music is more than a hobby for Sabrya—it’s a lifelong companion. “I was singing before I could talk,” she recalls, highlighting her deep-rooted connection to melody and harmony. Her journey started in elementary school, where she took her first steps into the world of choirs, and has blossomed into a role as a member of MiraCosta College’s chamber choir. “Listening to music and being a part of music will always be a thing for me,” she adds, which perfectly encapsulates her passion for this art form.

After graduating from Oceanside High School, Sabrya faced a critical decision about her future. While the University of California institutions felt out of reach financially, discovering the MiraCosta College Promise program changed everything. “The MiraCosta College Promise was offered, so why wouldn’t I take advantage of it?” she explains, emphasizing her pragmatic and confident approach to education.

Starting at MiraCosta in Fall 2022, Sabrya has already made significant contributions to campus life. Living with her grandparents provides her with a sense of stability as she navigates this new chapter. “I think the community aspect of it is really great. I don’t get the homesick feeling because I’m still at home,” she shares, showcasing her appreciation for her supportive environment.

Outside of her musical endeavors, Sabrya wears multiple hats that reflect her commitment to uplifting others. As co-president of the Black Student Union and a key player in the Umoja program, which guides African American students through college, she actively fosters a sense of belonging and empowerment among her peers. “I’m dedicated to making a positive impact on each person I interact with,” she asserts, highlighting her passion for education and community building.

But that’s not all—Sabrya’s aspirations extend beyond music. With ambitions of obtaining a bachelor’s in Africana Studies, she aims to deepen her understanding of cultural identity, preparing herself for a future where she can contribute to meaningful discussions about diversity. Her love for animals also shines through in her dream of becoming a veterinarian. Planning to transfer to UC Davis after completing her studies at MiraCosta in 2024 shows her determination to embrace the broader horizons of education and service.

Sabrya Mosley embodies the spirit of resilience and community involvement. Her multifaceted journey through music, leadership, and academic aspirations serves as an inspiration to both high school and middle school students in our community. With an unwavering passion for her craft and a heart committed to making a positive difference, Sabrya is a name to remember. Let’s celebrate her achievements and support her ongoing journey. Who knows? The next big star of our community might just be a few songs away!

Why Did You Start My Black City?

A MESSAGE FROM BRANDON BORNES (FOUNDER OF MY BLACK CITY)

We often worry that we don’t have enough resources in our community to go around. When we see someone in our community doing what we do but better, we get a little nervous or intimidated. Instead of using competition to spur on our creativity, teamwork, work ethic and innovation, we become soo overwhelmed with our own fears and insecurities that we gossip, sabotage, or hurt one another. This has happened to many exceptional people in our community. We need to do better and lead by example. Our love for each other needs to be greater than our fear of failure.

If we had to simplify into one word what My Black City is about, it would be LOVE! Because Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails.

When people come in contact with our brand, that’s what I want them to experience. It‘s not an easy aspiration to live up to, but we believe it‘s worth fighting for and it‘s what we need as a community.
