Celebrating Raye Clendening: A Beacon of Empowerment in Our Community

In our community, one woman stands out not just for her impressive accolades, but for the heart and dedication she pours into every initiative. Raye Clendening, a retired educator and community leader, has been nominated for recognition by an anonymous community member for her remarkable contributions to education and advocacy, particularly in the areas of equity and empowerment.Raye represents Area 6, the northernmost part of the MiraCosta College District, including north Oceanside. Throughout her career, which spanned several decades, she became one of San Diego County’s most respected educators. Serving as a teacher and later as principal for multiple schools—including Martin Luther King, Jr. Middle School—Raye’s influence resonated with countless students. She eventually directed all student services and special education programs in the Oceanside Unified School District, ensuring young people were both inspired and equipped to reach their potential.

Raye herself began her journey in education after attending community college. This experience opened doors for her, enabling her to transfer to a four-year university and pursue her passion for teaching. She champions the transformative power of community colleges and works tirelessly to bridge gaps so that other students can benefit from similar pathways to success.

Even in retirement, Raye has not slowed down. Instead, she has redirected her energy into volunteerism. Raye believes in investing in others, stating, “There was a community of individuals who invested in me early on, and I see my volunteer service as another way to invest in young students in my community.” This philosophy inspires her to remain active, with founding roles in numerous organizations, including the North County Business and Professional Women’s Organization and the North County African American Women’s Association.

In her commitment to equity, Raye has received numerous awards, including the Fran Alshire Leadership Award and the Middle Grades Principal of the Year for California. Her work not only opened doors for underserved students but also promoted excellence among teachers, transforming the educational landscape in North County.

One of her community members noted, “Raye inspires others to act with her selfless spirit. She sets an example for all to respect and imitate.” These words hold true, as Raye continues her legacy of empowerment through consulting for parent outreach programs at Oceanside Unified School District, further helping families navigate education.

The impact of Raye Clendening is immense. Her establishment of mentoring programs has benefitted more than 300 students, paving pathways towards higher education and professional success. She remains an advocate for scholarships, having helped countless young women achieve their dreams.

Join us in celebrating Raye Clendening and the countless contributions she has made to our community. Her story serves as a powerful reminder that one individual’s dedication can indeed change lives and shape futures. Raye is not just a leader but a continuous source of inspiration for all of us. Why Did You Start My Black City?

A MESSAGE FROM BRANDON BORNES (FOUNDER OF MY BLACK CITY)

We often worry that we don’t have enough resources in our community to go around. When we see someone in our community doing what we do but better, we get a little nervous or intimidated. Instead of using competition to spur on our creativity, teamwork, work ethic and innovation, we become soo overwhelmed with our own fears and insecurities that we gossip, sabotage, or hurt one another. This has happened to many exceptional people in our community. We need to do better and lead by example. Our love for each other needs to be greater than our fear of failure.

If we had to simplify into one word what My Black City is about, it would be LOVE! Because Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails.

When people come in contact with our brand, that’s what I want them to experience. It‘s not an easy aspiration to live up to, but we believe it‘s worth fighting for and it‘s what we need as a community.
