Celebrating Philip Lawrence: Fashion Innovator and Community Builder

In the vibrant world of fashion, authenticity shines as brightly as the garments themselves. Local designer and visionary, Philip Lawrence, embodies this principle. With a unique driving force and a passion for self-expression, he is not just creating one-of-a-kind apparel; he is building a community rooted in positivity and inclusivity. Born with a creative spark, Philip’s journey began in high school, where his love for fashion blossomed as he individualized his wardrobe. “It’s in you, not on you,” he affirms, a mantra guiding his artistic vision. He and his late brother teamed up to create exclusive pieces with their mother, a talented seamstress, helping to birth a legacy of creativity that Philip continues to this day. Philip’s mission extends beyond just fashion. He aims to “Reunite Every Nation, Neighborhood Together” through his work, celebrating individuality and diversity. “Imagine the power we hold when we come together and love one another,” he expresses, emphasizing the importance of unity within the community. The entire concept of PimpNRent revolves around more than just aesthetic. Philip champions positivity, open-mindedness, and fair interactions, creating an environment where individuals feel valued and respected. By listening to the needs and desires of his audience, he collaborates to craft solutions that resonate deeply. “Start by listening,” he advises, recalling the best insight he has received during his career. He believes in the transformative power of really hearing what others have to say, both in the industry and within the community. This philosophy allows him to innovate in ways that truly benefit everyone involved, forging strong connections through understanding. What makes Philip stand out in the clothing and apparel industry? He cites three core elements: authenticity, creativity, and collaboration. For him, remaining connected to his audience is vital; it fuels his unique designs while helping him create pieces that resonate with cultural trends and personal expression. He encourages aspiring designers to engage thoughtfully with their communities, emphasizing the need to support one another as collaborations can lead to stunning outcomes. Overcoming challenges such as balancing creativity with business demands, navigating trend-driven markets, and combating imposter syndrome are all part of the journey. Yet, Philip’s persistence shines through. “Shoot for the stars, never give up, and always believe in yourself!” he tells the next generation, urging them to explore every facet of business within their chosen field. Ultimately, Philip Lawrence is not just a fashion designer; he is a mentor, a community builder, and a source of inspiration. He hopes to leave a legacy of curiosity, connection, and ethical leadership, empowering others to thrive in their creativity. As he reminds us, “Stay FlyNRent. Rent is due, start collecting”—a playfully serious reminder that the best investment we can make is in ourselves and each other.

Why Did You Start My Black City?

A MESSAGE FROM BRANDON BORNES (FOUNDER OF MY BLACK CITY)

We often worry that we don’t have enough resources in our community to go around. When we see someone in our community doing what we do but better, we get a little nervous or intimidated. Instead of using competition to spur on our creativity, teamwork, work ethic and innovation, we become soo overwhelmed with our own fears and insecurities that we gossip, sabotage, or hurt one another. This has happened to many exceptional people in our community. We need to do better and lead by example. Our love for each other needs to be greater than our fear of failure.

If we had to simplify into one word what My Black City is about, it would be LOVE! Because Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails.

When people come in contact with our brand, that’s what I want them to experience. It‘s not an easy aspiration to live up to, but we believe it‘s worth fighting for and it‘s what we need as a community.
