Celebrating Perry Hockless: A Champion for Veterans

In the heart of our community, there’s a dedicated individual making a profound impact on the lives of veterans and their families. Perry Hockless, a name that resonates with respect and commitment, is the CEO of an innovative venture that crafts affordable memorial products for veterans. Since launching in August 2022, Perry’s mission has been to honor those who served our nation while ensuring that their families have access to beautiful, affordable memorial options.

With a background in management and an MBA in logistics, Perry entered this industry out of a deep-rooted desire to support veterans—a choice that aligns perfectly with the values instilled in them. “I love helping make memorials affordable for the less fortunate within our community; it’s what drives me to keep pushing forward,” Perry shared during a recent interview.

As a newcomer in the industry, establishing a brand and a storefront where customers can physically connect with the products has been challenging yet rewarding. “Opening up the first storefront for customers to visit was one of my proudest accomplishments,” Perry reflected. This landmark moment didn’t just mark a business triumph; it symbolized a commitment to service and community.

When asked what qualities contribute to success in this field, Perry emphasized the importance of customer service, honesty, and commitment. These pillars not only elevate one’s business but also foster trust and loyalty among clients. “If you focus on supporting families, everything else falls into place,” Perry advised, encapsulating the essence of how impactful work is done.

For students looking to make a difference, Perry has potent advice: “Seek a mentor who will take the time to teach you and support your goals.” This sage piece of guidance illustrates the importance of learning and growth, especially in an increasingly complex world. As young people navigate their paths to making an impact, it’s invaluable to learn from those who have traveled similar roads.

Despite the journey, Perry believes that patience and being a good listener are essential qualities for anyone aspiring to make a difference. “People want to feel heard; understanding their needs is critical to effective service,” they explained, showcasing a heartfelt understanding of the community’s dynamics.

With a deep commitment to their work, Perry is driven by a vision of leaving behind a legacy centered around commitment and dedication to helping others. “I hope to inspire those around me to embrace the values of support and service,” Perry noted, illustrating a perspective that transcends business—it’s about building a community grounded in mutual respect and support.

To conclude, Perry Hockless stands as a beacon of hope and change in our local community, blending expertise with genuine care. Their contributions not only honor those who have served but also inspire a new generation of young leaders eager to make a difference. As we celebrate Perry, let’s reflect on how we, too, can contribute to a brighter, more supportive world.

Why Did You Start My Black City?

A MESSAGE FROM BRANDON BORNES (FOUNDER OF MY BLACK CITY)

We often worry that we don’t have enough resources in our community to go around. When we see someone in our community doing what we do but better, we get a little nervous or intimidated. Instead of using competition to spur on our creativity, teamwork, work ethic and innovation, we become soo overwhelmed with our own fears and insecurities that we gossip, sabotage, or hurt one another. This has happened to many exceptional people in our community. We need to do better and lead by example. Our love for each other needs to be greater than our fear of failure.

If we had to simplify into one word what My Black City is about, it would be LOVE! Because Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails.

When people come in contact with our brand, that’s what I want them to experience. It‘s not an easy aspiration to live up to, but we believe it‘s worth fighting for and it‘s what we need as a community.
