Honoring NuTerrie Hawthorne: A Community Beacon
NuTerrie’s journey began in 2006 when she became a community college counselor and instructor through the SDICCCA faculty internship project. Since then, she has held various roles, including an associate career counselor at Miracosta College and as a full-time counseling faculty member. Her comprehensive counseling experience covers a broad spectrum, supporting diverse populations such as Athletes, first-generation college students, veterans, and former foster youth across multiple college districts.
One of the hallmarks of NuTerrie’s career is her unwavering commitment to helping students navigate the often complex landscape of career planning. Specializing in career counseling, she has access to powerful assessment tools like the MBTI, Clifton Strengths Finder, and the Strong Interest Inventory, which she leverages to guide students toward fulfilling careers based on their unique skills and personalities.
What sets NuTerrie apart is her belief that feeling fulfilled in one’s career is crucial. After experiencing the disconnect between her corporate roles and her true aspirations, she collaborated with her mentor, Carolyn Kalil, to co-author the inspiring book, How to Create a Career Pathway that Matters in Any Economy. This work serves as a manifesto for students seeking their own unique paths and has helped countless individuals achieve a sense of purpose in their professional lives.
Outside of her professional duties, NuTerrie embodies the spirit of service within her community. She has actively participated in initiatives such as the RUSD African American Parent Council and has influenced younger generations through the UCR University STEM Program. Her tireless volunteer work with Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Incorporated reiterates her dedication to social responsibility and community engagement.
NuTerrie’s life experiences, including being a teen parent and a first-generation college student, fuel her passion for helping others, especially those facing similar challenges. Her journey wasn’t easy, but her education—a Master’s Degree in Social Work from Loma Linda University and a B.S. in Home Economics—demonstrates how perseverance and hard work can lead to fulfilling and impactful careers.
As we celebrate NuTerrie Hawthorne, it’s essential to recognize the strength she brings into our community. Her commitment to education, career services, and youth empowerment sets a transformative example for high school and middle school students seeking to shape their futures. Let’s take inspiration from her journey and remember that every step forward counts. Thank you, NuTerrie, for your unwavering dedication and the light you bring to our community!
