Celebrating Nancy Speaks: A Heart of Gold in Our Community

In a world that sometimes feels disconnected, Nancy Speaks shines like a beacon of hope and love in our community. Known for her unwavering faith and diligent volunteer work, Nancy has been an inspiration to many, especially to the youth in our area. At the age of 16, she embarked on her journey of community service, fueled by an unquenchable desire to connect with others and make a difference.Nancy believes that her role in the community is a vital one, as she actively engages with children and youth, nurturing their potential and encouraging their growth. “I got involved to know who my community is and jumped right in,” she reflects. With skills in empathy, business, counseling, and organization, Nancy has found the perfect blend to impact those around her profoundly. She often states, “I love to give back because I’ve been blessed with so much.” Her generosity fosters a culture of kindness that ripples through our local schools and neighborhoods.

With a heart full of love and a spirit full of grit, Nancy stands as a model for what it means to serve. She shares the best advice she’s received: “Love one another.” This motto encapsulates her life philosophy and guides her interactions with everyone she meets. She encourages those looking to get involved in their communities, saying, “Get involved! There are lots of ways to volunteer.” Her enthusiasm for service reminds us all that together, we can create a positive environment that enhances the lives of everyone around us.

In her experience, Nancy identifies three essential qualities that help individuals excel in community settings: caring, motivation, and grit. These attributes not only empower her to overcome personal challenges, such as rising above negativity from others who doubted her abilities, but they also inspire those she mentors. “Growing up poor in the Boston area and facing skepticism only motivated me more to do it,” she shares with pride.

Throughout her journey, Nancy has drawn strength from two significant influences: her mother and her faith in Jesus Christ. Her mother instilled in her the importance of perseverance, urging her to “never give up,” while Jesus’ presence continually inspires Nancy to prioritize love in all her endeavors. “I hope to leave behind a legacy of love,” she expresses, and this resonates deeply with all who know her.

To the younger generation, Nancy offers heartfelt advice: “Never give up, and YOU ARE ENOUGH!” These powerful words serve as a reminder that perseverance and self-worth are paramount in the face of life’s challenges. Her legacy of compassion and commitment to service is a beacon for all, encouraging each of us to cultivate empathy and engage in the betterment of our community.

Nancy Speaks is not just a name; it’s a mission to uplift others with love, kindness, and support. As we continue to learn from her, let us all strive to be more connected, compassionate, and committed to achieving a brighter future together.

Why Did You Start My Black City?

A MESSAGE FROM BRANDON BORNES (FOUNDER OF MY BLACK CITY)

We often worry that we don’t have enough resources in our community to go around. When we see someone in our community doing what we do but better, we get a little nervous or intimidated. Instead of using competition to spur on our creativity, teamwork, work ethic and innovation, we become soo overwhelmed with our own fears and insecurities that we gossip, sabotage, or hurt one another. This has happened to many exceptional people in our community. We need to do better and lead by example. Our love for each other needs to be greater than our fear of failure.

If we had to simplify into one word what My Black City is about, it would be LOVE! Because Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails.

When people come in contact with our brand, that’s what I want them to experience. It‘s not an easy aspiration to live up to, but we believe it‘s worth fighting for and it‘s what we need as a community.
