Several years ago I stopped celebrating retail holidays, such as Thanksgiving and Christmas. If we are friends on Instagram, you may have seen my little anti-Thanksgiving video reel. It amazes me, I went from being the go-to house on Thanksgiving and three trees for Christmas… to saying hell nah to it all. The only tradition I kept was feeding the less-fortunate.
First, it was because I noticed what it was doing to my community. I saw families struggling to make ends meet invest bill money into a turkey dinner or travel arrangements. Parents are depressed because they can’t fill the tree with presents. Other parents racking up credit card bills, for what? Just so kids can compete at school? Compare who got what to who didn’t. Then the children like me who went without gifts often had to deal with the embarrassment and shame of not being rewarded by Santa, or whoever. Not to mention half the families don’t like each other anyways. lol no lol
As I got older and the internet became more accessible, meaning more information for your local walking-Wikipedia, as my friends call me. I learned the history of my grandmothers’ people, both being of Native American descent. Needless to say, true American history is devastating! Now celebrating Thanksgiving feels like I am dishonoring my forefathers and honoring their oppressors.
I get it it’s a time for us to be grateful, to spend time with our families, yada-yada-yada. Unfortunately, I see it as a time for my people to contribute to the economy, as expected. Black people are the top investors in meat and beauty supplies. Trust and believe there is lots of food purchased along with some lace-fronts wigs and eyelashes to accompany. Ha! I’m cracking up over here, but I am serious.
Now, I don’t even want to discuss Black Friday or how my Lovebugs around the world have been shopping out on unnecessary items. Statistics say it’s a habit of the poor to buy things on sale. Folks are buying big ass TVs, as if there was something wrong with the 43″ one they already have. I remember when a 32″ was a big deal. Well, I did not come to you to vent. Ironically, I did come to tell you about the Cyber Monday specials on deck.

“ The deep dive was an immersive experience into who I was, who I am, and who I want to be. The day felt so intentional from the food I was instructed to eat, the cold shower I had to take and the exploratory questions I had to sit with myself. I’ve never looked back at anything I wrote for myself as much as I do the stuff I wrote that day. Whenever I feel stuck, I know I can go look at what I created that day to know I am doing the work or to get some motivation to get me back on track. ” -Dr Davis, Clinical Psychologist
