Celebrating a Local Leader: Mike Alston Jr.

In the heart of Oceanside, a remarkable story of faith, leadership, and community unfolds through the life of Mike Alston Jr. Since his family joined Mariners Church Oceanside a year and a half ago, Mike has become an inspiring example for many in the local congregation. His journey is not just about personal growth but also about nurturing a community where individuals can thrive together.

Mike’s spiritual journey began in Philadelphia, where he was raised in a faith-filled environment. However, it was in December 2011 that he took a significant step forward in his spiritual walk by being baptized. This experience ignited a deeper connection to his faith that continues to shape his life today. “The call to action I felt during my baptism was powerful,” Mike reflects, referencing his favorite Bible verse, Acts 22:6-16, which speaks of urgency and purpose.

Since joining Mariners Oceanside, Mike and his family have devoted time to the church community. After completing the Rooted class this past spring, Mike stepped into the role of a Life Group leader. “Leading a life group has allowed me to connect with others and share my experiences,” Mike explains. His commitment to supporting others on their spiritual journeys shows his dedication to making a positive impact within the church.

Professionally, Mike serves as the Vice President of Operations at Avid Bioservices, a biopharmaceutical company that plays a critical role in the development of life-saving drugs. Mike oversees various functions, including Environmental Health and Safety, Facilities, Engineering, and Manufacturing. “Every day is an opportunity to lead my team and mentor managers to excel in their roles,” he shares. Mike takes pride in knowing that the work he does contributes to producing high-quality drug intermediates that help patients in need. His career reflects not only his expertise but also his heart for service.

Looking back, Mike wishes he could tell his younger self some important advice: “Keep pushing for excellence but be patient with the results. Don’t worry so much; God will work it out, just keep working smart and hard.” This wisdom stems from his own experiences and the challenges he faced on his path to success.

As he reflects on the legacy he wants to leave for future generations, Mike hopes to make a lasting impression through each interaction. “I want people I come across to leave our conversations feeling better than before,” he says with a smile. This desire to uplift and inspire speaks volumes about his character and commitment to creating a supportive environment.

In Oceanside, Mike Alston Jr. stands out as a beacon of faith, leadership, and community service. Whether through his role at Mariners Church or in the biopharmaceutical industry, Mike’s dedication to improving lives and fostering growth is a true testament to the impact one individual can make. As we celebrate Mike, let us remember the importance of service, community, and leading with love.

Why Did You Start My Black City?

A MESSAGE FROM BRANDON BORNES (FOUNDER OF MY BLACK CITY)

We often worry that we don’t have enough resources in our community to go around. When we see someone in our community doing what we do but better, we get a little nervous or intimidated. Instead of using competition to spur on our creativity, teamwork, work ethic and innovation, we become soo overwhelmed with our own fears and insecurities that we gossip, sabotage, or hurt one another. This has happened to many exceptional people in our community. We need to do better and lead by example. Our love for each other needs to be greater than our fear of failure.

If we had to simplify into one word what My Black City is about, it would be LOVE! Because Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails.

When people come in contact with our brand, that’s what I want them to experience. It‘s not an easy aspiration to live up to, but we believe it‘s worth fighting for and it‘s what we need as a community.
