Celebrating Michele Mayes: A Beacon of Faith and Music

In the heart of our community, one person stands out not just for her talent but also for her unwavering faith and dedication: Michele Mayes. With over 35 years in the medical field and a vibrant music ministry, Michele has touched countless lives through her work and passion.

Michele’s journey began at St. John Missionary Baptist Church, where she attended for 25 years. It was here in 1982 that she accepted Jesus Christ as her personal savior and took the important step of baptism. Her involvement didn’t stop there; she actively participated in Sunday School, the Youth Ministry, and the Music Ministry.

In 1996, Michele joined Shiloh Church of God in Christ, where she became the choir director and minister of music. For over two decades, she poured her heart into praise and worship, touching the spirit of many with her talent. Since 2012, Michele has been a member of North Coast Church in Vista, California, continuing her vibrant journey of faith and music.

Michele believes that music is a powerful tool for connecting people with their spirituality. “I love arranging vocals and directing choirs,” she shares. “Conducting choir workshops for different churches in the community has been a joyful experience, enabling me to share my passion while helping others grow in faith.” Her influence extends far beyond the stage, as she teaches and inspires younger generations, encouraging them to explore their own spiritual paths through music.

While Michele has made a significant impact in the music ministry, she has also dedicated her professional life to the medical industry. Transitioning from a medical biller to a role in Revenue Cycle Management, she brings the same spirit of excellence to her work as she does in church. “My job is about serving others, much like my ministry,” she explains. “Both roles require compassion, understanding, and a desire to help people.”

Reflecting on her journey, Michele offers wise advice for the younger generation. “Give God your first and your best. Take your time when making decisions. Always seek God first in everything you do,” she emphasizes. This advice stems from her favorite Bible verse, Proverbs 3:5-6: “ ” Michele finds strength in these words, reminding her that life’s challenges are easier to navigate with faith.

As she looks to the future, Michele hopes to leave a lasting legacy rooted in love and dedication. “I want people to remember me for my love for the Lord and my commitment to ministry,” she says. “I strive to operate with a spirit of excellence in everything I do.”

Michele Mayes is more than a musician or a professional; she is a community treasure, a guiding light for the youth, and an exemplary model of faith and service. Her story inspires us all to embrace our gifts, serve with joy, and trust in the path that God sets before us.

Why Did You Start My Black City?

A MESSAGE FROM BRANDON BORNES (FOUNDER OF MY BLACK CITY)

We often worry that we don’t have enough resources in our community to go around. When we see someone in our community doing what we do but better, we get a little nervous or intimidated. Instead of using competition to spur on our creativity, teamwork, work ethic and innovation, we become soo overwhelmed with our own fears and insecurities that we gossip, sabotage, or hurt one another. This has happened to many exceptional people in our community. We need to do better and lead by example. Our love for each other needs to be greater than our fear of failure.

If we had to simplify into one word what My Black City is about, it would be LOVE! Because Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails.

When people come in contact with our brand, that’s what I want them to experience. It‘s not an easy aspiration to live up to, but we believe it‘s worth fighting for and it‘s what we need as a community.
