In the heart of Oceanside, a beacon of inspiration shines through the tireless efforts of Michael James Brown. Known for his unwavering dedication to raising awareness about race and ethnicity, Michael is the driving force behind the Other Awareness Project, an initiative aimed at promoting understanding and inclusivity within the community.

Michael, who identifies with the pronouns he/him/his, embarked on his journey to impact the community during his high school years, fueled by a passion for social justice and equality. His background empowered him to recognize the importance of open conversations regarding race and ethnicity, and he wanted to use his voice to facilitate those dialogues.

Equipped with strong communication skills, deep empathy, and an unyielding commitment, Michael has crafted an approach that resonates with his peers. He emphasizes the importance of listening to diverse voices, and facilitating discussions that explore personal experiences and stories—a methodology that has proven transformative in reshaping perspectives among young people in Oceanside.

“What I love most about my role is the ability to connect with others,” Michael shares. “Seeing someone gain a new understanding after a conversation is incredibly rewarding.” His engagement with community members and students aims to foster a sense of belonging that transcends differences.

Among the best advice he received was to construct a foundation built on respect and compassion. Michael highlights that being open-minded is vital; it allows individuals to learn and grow without fear of judgment. He encourages anyone looking to get involved in community initiatives to stay true to their principles, and actively seek connections that drive mutual respect and understanding.

As a fierce advocate, Michael knows that the journey is fraught with challenges. He has encountered skepticism and resistance, but he insists that these obstacles are merely opportunities for growth. His experience has shaped his belief in three key traits essential for excelling in community work: resilience, authenticity, and collaborative spirit.

Michael reflects on the legacy he hopes to leave: “I want to inspire the next generation to become active participants in their communities, to stand up for what they believe in, and to impact lives through understanding.” His sentiments resonate with young individuals who are looking to make a difference but may feel uncertain about where to start.

One inspirational figure in Michael’s life has been his former teacher, who taught him the power of compassionate communication. That influence ignited his passion and encouraged him to take the first step toward activism.

Why Did You Start My Black City?

A MESSAGE FROM BRANDON BORNES (FOUNDER OF MY BLACK CITY)

We often worry that we don’t have enough resources in our community to go around. When we see someone in our community doing what we do but better, we get a little nervous or intimidated. Instead of using competition to spur on our creativity, teamwork, work ethic and innovation, we become soo overwhelmed with our own fears and insecurities that we gossip, sabotage, or hurt one another. This has happened to many exceptional people in our community. We need to do better and lead by example. Our love for each other needs to be greater than our fear of failure.

If we had to simplify into one word what My Black City is about, it would be LOVE! Because Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails.

When people come in contact with our brand, that’s what I want them to experience. It‘s not an easy aspiration to live up to, but we believe it‘s worth fighting for and it‘s what we need as a community.
