In our community, there are individuals who embody the spirit of creativity and commitment, and one such person is Maxx Moses. A visionary artist and community advocate, Maxx has been shaping the landscape of Black art and culture for decades. Since joining the Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity in 1983, Maxx has dedicated his life to not only creating large-scale artworks that celebrate Black heritage but also empowering the young minds of our community.Maxx’s work goes beyond just painting; it is a calling to inspire and uplift. Known for his transformative murals, he recently completed two stunning pieces at the Grossmont Trolley Center that illustrate the depth and beauty of Black culture. These vibrant artworks serve as a source of pride for the community, encouraging local youth to appreciate their roots and understand the significance of representation.

But Maxx’s contribution does not stop at his art. He has also played a pivotal role in developing programs aimed at empowering the youth, fostering creativity, and nurturing the next generation of artists and leaders. “At the core of my being,” he says, “I’ve been able to recognize where there’s a need and create opportunities to fill that need through quality experiences.” His ability to identify areas that require support makes him a cornerstone of our community.

What Maxx loves most about his work is the ever-evolving nature of community demands. “The constant changes force me to be more aware of the current climate,” he notes. This awareness allows him to remain relevant and impactful, ensuring he meets the young people where they are. He stresses the importance of love, communication, and devotion as essential skills for anyone looking to make a difference.

Maxx’s journey has not been without challenges. The biggest obstacles often revolve around finding growth and opportunity. Yet, he remains undeterred, driven by a passion that is infectious. His advice to younger generations is straightforward: “Stay inspired.” It’s a reminder of the importance of maintaining one’s passion and enthusiasm while navigating life’s ups and downs.

One person who has significantly influenced Maxx’s journey is Barry Pollard, whose relentless commitment to community leadership serves as a model for Maxx. This mentorship has undoubtedly helped shape Maxx’s approach to both art and advocacy, showing him that dedicated leadership can make a transformative impact.

As Maxx continues to create and inspire, he hopes his legacy will be one of authenticity. “I always strived to be my true self,” he reflects, emphasizing the importance of staying true to one’s values and beliefs in the pursuit of a meaningful life.

Why Did You Start My Black City?

A MESSAGE FROM BRANDON BORNES (FOUNDER OF MY BLACK CITY)

We often worry that we don’t have enough resources in our community to go around. When we see someone in our community doing what we do but better, we get a little nervous or intimidated. Instead of using competition to spur on our creativity, teamwork, work ethic and innovation, we become soo overwhelmed with our own fears and insecurities that we gossip, sabotage, or hurt one another. This has happened to many exceptional people in our community. We need to do better and lead by example. Our love for each other needs to be greater than our fear of failure.

If we had to simplify into one word what My Black City is about, it would be LOVE! Because Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails.

When people come in contact with our brand, that’s what I want them to experience. It‘s not an easy aspiration to live up to, but we believe it‘s worth fighting for and it‘s what we need as a community.
