Celebrating Maturation Sol: A Soulful Community Force

If you’ve ever felt the rhythm of funk music pulsating through your veins while strolling through Chula Vista or attending a street fair in Encinitas, chances are you’ve encountered the magic of Maturation Sol. This Southern California music collective is more than just a band; it’s a vibrant embodiment of community spirit, uplifting souls through the power of music.Maturation Sol, who prefers to go by their name alone, has been deeply impactful in their community since rebranding in 2020. The challenging times brought about by the pandemic transformed their mission into something even more profound. “Our slogan, ‘It’s Still One Motion, so Ride the Wave of Life,’ encourages people to overcome obstacles and recognize the miracles surrounding us,” they share. This mantra has become a guiding principle for the band and a message they hope resonates with their audience.Playing live music across Southern Cal, Maturation Sol focuses on providing a soulful experience free from derogatory messages—a rarity in today’s music scene. “Seeing children dance or look on in amazement hits our soul as a band,” they say, emphasizing the importance of nurturing the next generation of musicians. Their performances are infused with unity and fun, and the crowd’s diverse backgrounds only add to the vibrancy of their shows.

Music, especially soul, has an inherent ability to connect with the inner self. Maturation Sol elaborates that the blend of tempo, sound, and beats creates a centered experience for the audience—one that transcends the everyday. “For us, it’s about the experience and the joy our music brings,” they explain.

When asked about the qualities that help individuals excel in the music industry, Maturation Sol emphasizes the importance of humility, honesty, and resilience. Drawing from their journey, they advise young aspiring musicians: “Pick up an instrument, not for fame but as a meditative device during stressful times. You’d be surprised how fulfilling it can be.”

A significant loss in their journey was the passing of their former drummer, Leon Wesley, in a car accident in 2021. Maturation Sol remembers him fondly, recognizing the inspiration he provided even in troubling times. “His passion for music is what we strive to carry on,” they mention. The band’s respect for fellow musicians exemplifies their commitment to uplifting rather than competing.

Looking forward, Maturation Sol envisions leaving behind a legacy rooted in good vibes and soulful connections. “The memories can be everlasting, and we’re honored to perform for audiences that appreciate our music,” they state humbly, understanding the importance of community in their artistry.

As they continue to ride the wave of life, Maturation Sol remains devoted to fostering an environment where music uplifts, inspires, and unites everyone—proving that through soul music, we can all transcend boundaries and celebrate our shared humanity.

So next time you’re enjoying the groove of Maturation Sol at an event in San Diego, remember: it’s not just about the music; it’s about the message of oneness, positivity, and resilience that will resonate long after the last note is played.

Why Did You Start My Black City?

A MESSAGE FROM BRANDON BORNES (FOUNDER OF MY BLACK CITY)

We often worry that we don’t have enough resources in our community to go around. When we see someone in our community doing what we do but better, we get a little nervous or intimidated. Instead of using competition to spur on our creativity, teamwork, work ethic and innovation, we become soo overwhelmed with our own fears and insecurities that we gossip, sabotage, or hurt one another. This has happened to many exceptional people in our community. We need to do better and lead by example. Our love for each other needs to be greater than our fear of failure.

If we had to simplify into one word what My Black City is about, it would be LOVE! Because Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails.

When people come in contact with our brand, that’s what I want them to experience. It‘s not an easy aspiration to live up to, but we believe it‘s worth fighting for and it‘s what we need as a community.
