Celebrating La Kerie Williams: A Champion for Community and Culture

For over nine years, La Kerie has dedicated herself to uplifting her community and advocating for Black excellence. A community advocate, educator, small business owner, and legal consultant, she is a woman on a mission to foster positivity and champion those around her.La Kerie believes in being accessible and relatable. “I’m a real person,” she says. “I love God, my family, my sorority, my culture, and I love people.” Her passion for her roots is evident, and her commitment reflects a life dedicated to inspiring others. She has made an impact through various roles, touching the lives of many, especially within the neurodivergent community.

Having grown up in a Black household that celebrated culture, education, and spirituality, La Kerie’s values were shaped by the powerful influence of programs like “The Cosby Show.” Watching characters like Claire Huxtable was foundational for her; they illuminated the beauty of Black excellence and the importance of advocacy. This influence laid the groundwork for her lifelong mission: to empower and uplift others.

“Being a champion for people and my culture is a privilege,” La Kerie shares. She emphasizes the importance of compassion and a willingness to listen, noting these qualities are essential for anyone looking to make a difference. “When people show you who they are, believe them. Use that knowledge to propel you towards your purpose,” she advises.

La Kerie has faced her share of challenges, including navigating racism, sexism, and economic disparities. Why Did You Start My Black City?

We often worry that we don’t have enough resources in our community to go around. When we see someone in our community doing what we do but better, we get a little nervous or intimidated. Instead of using competition to spur on our creativity, teamwork, work ethic and innovation, we become soo overwhelmed with our own fears and insecurities that we gossip, sabotage, or hurt one another. This has happened to many exceptional people in our community. We need to do better and lead by example. Our love for each other needs to be greater than our fear of failure.

If we had to simplify into one word what My Black City is about, it would be LOVE! Because Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails.

When people come in contact with our brand, that’s what I want them to experience. It‘s not an easy aspiration to live up to, but we believe it‘s worth fighting for and it‘s what we need as a community.
