In our vibrant community, many young individuals are making significant contributions, but few shine quite as brightly as Kenya Bradley. Kenya, a dedicated sociology student at MiraCosta College and a proud member of the class of 2024, has been recognized for her unwavering commitment to serving others, making her a standout role model for both middle and high school students in our area.As the Transition Student Success Liaison at MiraCosta College, Kenya plays an indispensable role in guiding students, especially those who are formally incarcerated, on their educational journeys. Her passion for education and advocacy for marginalized groups shines through, as she works diligently to ensure that every student has the support they need to thrive. “I’ve always wanted to help students succeed and feel empowered in their education,” Kenya explains, illustrating her intent to become an academic counselor dedicated to making a difference in the lives of students.Kenya’s dedication to her peers doesn’t end within college walls. Prior to her current position, she held various impactful roles at MiraCosta College, including serving as a Career Peer, Student Ambassador, Financial Aid Advocate, and in Service Learning. These experiences have honed her skills in leadership and community service, showcasing her commitment to her education and those around her. “Being involved in these programs has opened my eyes to the various challenges our students face, and it inspires me to keep fighting for better resources and support,” she reflects.

In addition to her work at MiraCosta, Kenya made a significant impact at Operation Hope Shelter, where she served as an Assistant to the Director. During her time there, she provided crucial administrative support, managed front desk operations, and coordinated the organization of donated items to assist families in need. Kenya’s efforts extended to assembling food bags for alumni and supervising children, ensuring a safe environment for all. Her ability to manage multiple responsibilities while maintaining compassion for others exemplifies her incredible character.

Kenya believes in the power of community and consistently strives to uplift those around her. “We are all more capable than we think, and it’s important to lend a hand to those in need,” she shares, encouraging young people to engage in volunteer opportunities and support local organizations. For students in our community, Kenya is more than just a success story; she represents the impact each of us can have on our neighbors and peers through service and dedication.

Why Did You Start My Black City?

A MESSAGE FROM BRANDON BORNES (FOUNDER OF MY BLACK CITY)

We often worry that we don’t have enough resources in our community to go around. When we see someone in our community doing what we do but better, we get a little nervous or intimidated. Instead of using competition to spur on our creativity, teamwork, work ethic and innovation, we become soo overwhelmed with our own fears and insecurities that we gossip, sabotage, or hurt one another. This has happened to many exceptional people in our community. We need to do better and lead by example. Our love for each other needs to be greater than our fear of failure.

If we had to simplify into one word what My Black City is about, it would be LOVE! Because Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails.

When people come in contact with our brand, that’s what I want them to experience. It‘s not an easy aspiration to live up to, but we believe it‘s worth fighting for and it‘s what we need as a community.
