Kendrick is committed to creating opportunities for underserved populations through education, social justice and advocacy. Throughout his professional career, Kendrick has created opportunities for students to obtain a college education, develop soft skills, helped improve retention and matriculation of students of color in secondary and postsecondary education and most importantly has helped develop emerging leaders.

Kendrick’s experiences growing up taught him the importance of giving back to the community, understanding and respecting tradition and history and most importantly, the value of life experiences as stepping stones to learn and grow as an individual.

What role do you play in your Industry?
  • Currently I am a middle school administrator at Denver Discovery School. Denver Discovery School is one of a few schools that are shaped by the Community School model, through this model we strive to bring community into the school to enhance students learning experience and provide true holistic support to the families we serve. I have been an educator for over 17 years and during this time I have served in many capacities that have allowed me to share my experiences and build a network that has opened the doors to education and employment opportunities for many students I have had the privilege of serving. I have also worked as a mentor, serving as one of the founding members of the Mentoring of Men program. Mentoring of Men mission is to introduce young men of color to positive male role models of color.

What year did you start in your industry?

  • I started working as an educator in 2001.

What Certifications, Degrees, Titles and Experience do you have in your industry?

  • I received my Bachelor of Arts degree in History from the University of Northern Colorado, Masters Degree in Secondary Education from Grand Canyon University, I am a 2013 Chamber Connect Leadership Development Program graduate. Currently I hold my K-12 School Principal License

Why & How did you get involved in your industry?

  • I got involved in education because of great educators that influenced me when I was in high school. I wanted to pay it forward and mentor and guide students of color. Education has been a catalyst for change for myself and my siblings and I believe the adage that education is something that once obtained, can never be taken away from you. In college I knew I wanted to teach so upon my graduating from college I began working in education as a paraprofessional before transitioning to a teacher role.

What do you love most about your role in your industry?

  • I love being able to interact with young people, especially those who may have been written off and helping them access academic, career and professional options that they felt were out of their reach. I love serving the community that gave so much to me and being a positive role model for people. I love seeing young people define and achieve success for themselves as well as those who break generational cycles that have impacted their families. I love being an advocate for systemic changes in our educational systems that will negate oppresive and systemic racist practices while reshaping what education can look like for todays learners.

What is the best advice you have received about how to impact your industry?

  • Be authentically myself. This piece of advice has guided me for years, and has served me well because at the end of the day students can see through the fake surface level foolishness.
