As a passionate advocate for youth engagement and environmental sustainability, Kemi plays a pivotal role in inspiring her peers to make a positive impact, demonstrating that age is not a barrier to change.

Kemi’s journey began at a young age when she realized that getting involved in her local community could spark meaningful change. “I’ve always been drawn to nature and community service,” she explains, reflecting on how her passion led her to volunteer for various organizations throughout her childhood. Over the years, she has taken on various roles, from leading community clean-up drives to organizing workshops aimed at educating her peers about environmental issues and social responsibility.

When asked about the most valuable advice she has received regarding community impact, Kemi emphasizes the importance of perseverance: “Keep pushing through the challenges. The road isn’t always smooth, but the effort is worthwhile.” This is sage wisdom she lives by, having faced and overcome obstacles such as skepticism from peers and resource limitations while implementing her projects.

If you’re wondering how to excel in such a dynamic setting, Kemi outlines three essential qualities: “Stay curious, commit to learning, and always be ready to support one another.” These traits have helped her rise as a leader within her age group, fostering a sense of unity and purpose among her peers. To those seeking to deepen their involvement, she encourages them to embrace their interests and share them with others. “The more you get connected, the more you can contribute—everyone has something valuable to offer.”

Kemi holds her family in high esteem, crediting her mother as a significant source of inspiration. “She taught me the importance of giving back and being compassionate,” Kemi shares, her respect evident. As she looks to the future, Kemi hopes to leave a legacy of empowerment, reminding those around her that they can make a difference, no matter their age or circumstance.

Why Did You Start My Black City?

A MESSAGE FROM BRANDON BORNES (FOUNDER OF MY BLACK CITY)

We often worry that we don’t have enough resources in our community to go around. When we see someone in our community doing what we do but better, we get a little nervous or intimidated. Instead of using competition to spur on our creativity, teamwork, work ethic and innovation, we become soo overwhelmed with our own fears and insecurities that we gossip, sabotage, or hurt one another. This has happened to many exceptional people in our community. We need to do better and lead by example. Our love for each other needs to be greater than our fear of failure.

If we had to simplify into one word what My Black City is about, it would be LOVE! Because Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails.

When people come in contact with our brand, that’s what I want them to experience. It‘s not an easy aspiration to live up to, but we believe it‘s worth fighting for and it‘s what we need as a community.
