Celebrating Kate Scaife: A Beacon of Hope for Students

In our community, there are individuals who rise to the occasion, inspiring those around them with their dedication and passion. One such individual is Kate Scaife, a Student Services Specialist at MiraCosta College. Nominated by an anonymous community member, Kate has made a profound impact on the lives of numerous students, especially those who are low-income, first-generation, and from diverse backgrounds.Kate’s journey is remarkable. After a 20-year hiatus from education, she returned to college in 2009, highlighting the importance of educational support programs for students who face various challenges. With the assistance of MiraCosta College’s CalWORKs, EOPS, and CARE programs, Kate successfully navigated her educational path. She earned her Associate’s degree in Sociology and transferred to California State University, San Marcos, where she completed her Bachelor’s degree. Her commitment to education did not stop there—she went on to earn a Master of Education at San Diego State University, along with a Graduate Certificate in Trauma-Informed Care and Mental Health Recovery.

Kate’s passion for education goes beyond her achievements; she dedicates her career to serving low-income and first-generation students. As part of her role, she assists students in crafting Individual Training Plans, organizes student success workshops, and coordinates program orientations. Her efforts ensure that students are not just supported academically but empowered to pursue their dreams.

Her commitment to educational justice extends further through her involvement as an Advisory Board Member of the Black Alliance at MiraCosta College. This alliance emphasizes the importance of cultural empowerment and community for students of color. By advocating for educational equity, Kate plays a pivotal role in changing the trajectory for future generations of students.

The impact of Kate’s work is immeasurable. Students attribute their academic and personal success to the support and guidance she provides. She actively collaborates with various departments and maintains professional relationships with community partners, ensuring that students have the necessary resources to thrive. Why Did You Start My Black City?

We often worry that we don’t have enough resources in our community to go around. When we see someone in our community doing what we do but better, we get a little nervous or intimidated. Instead of using competition to spur on our creativity, teamwork, work ethic and innovation, we become soo overwhelmed with our own fears and insecurities that we gossip, sabotage, or hurt one another. This has happened to many exceptional people in our community. We need to do better and lead by example. Our love for each other needs to be greater than our fear of failure.

If we had to simplify into one word what My Black City is about, it would be LOVE! Because Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails.

When people come in contact with our brand, that’s what I want them to experience. It‘s not an easy aspiration to live up to, but we believe it‘s worth fighting for and it‘s what we need as a community.
