John Hardin II: A Life Guided by Faith and Financial Literacy

Meet John Hardin II, a beacon of light in our community. Nominated by an anonymous community member, John embodies the spirit of service, faith, and financial education, proving that one person can make a significant impact.

John wears multiple hats: he is a dedicated leader at Mariners Church in Oceanside, where he serves as an elder and a member of the safety team. But John’s contributions to the community extend beyond his church. As a financial advisor, he dedicates his career to teaching others about financial literacy, emphasizing the importance of managing money wisely. John believes that financial education is crucial, particularly for young people who may lack guidance on saving, budgeting, and investing.

Raised as a Baptist in Ann Arbor, Michigan, John’s faith journey began early, but it was a move to California that deepened his relationship with Jesus Christ. Encountering a church that encouraged independent Bible study catalyzed John’s spiritual growth, leading him to understand his faith on a more personal level. Inspired by this journey, he strives to help others navigate their financial paths with the same ethical values imparted by his beliefs.

In John’s eyes, financial literacy is not just about numbers; it’s intertwined with his faith journey. “My relationship with Christ enables me to do things ethically and with integrity,” he shares. John aims to empower individuals to make informed financial decisions that benefit not only themselves but also future generations, drawing on wisdom from biblical teachings.

Advice from the Bible shapes John’s day-to-day interactions. The verse “Be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to become angry” acts as his guiding principle, helping him avoid misunderstandings while building respectful relationships. He draws strength from Galatians 6:9, which encourages perseverance through challenges—a mindset that has sustained him throughout his life and career.

Adapting to change has been one of John’s significant challenges. He learned that focusing on personal growth is more rewarding than pursuing temporary solutions to life’s difficulties. This long-term perspective fuels his commitment to nurturing meaningful relationships and fostering authentic connections with others.

When reflecting on his life, John feels immense pride in his family. With five adult children who support one another and embody the values he instilled, their independence brings him joy. His professional journey as an entrepreneur showcases his dedication to creating opportunities aligned with his faith, turning challenges into lessons that he now passes on to his children.

John Hardin II’s story is a testament to the power of faith and service in everyday life. He exemplifies how integrity and compassion can translate into positive community impact. His narrative serves as a rich reminder that true success is not measured solely by financial achievements but rather by the positive difference we make in the lives of others while staying true to our beliefs.

Why Did You Start My Black City?

A MESSAGE FROM BRANDON BORNES (FOUNDER OF MY BLACK CITY)

We often worry that we don’t have enough resources in our community to go around. When we see someone in our community doing what we do but better, we get a little nervous or intimidated. Instead of using competition to spur on our creativity, teamwork, work ethic and innovation, we become soo overwhelmed with our own fears and insecurities that we gossip, sabotage, or hurt one another. This has happened to many exceptional people in our community. We need to do better and lead by example. Our love for each other needs to be greater than our fear of failure.

If we had to simplify into one word what My Black City is about, it would be LOVE! Because Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails.

When people come in contact with our brand, that’s what I want them to experience. It‘s not an easy aspiration to live up to, but we believe it‘s worth fighting for and it‘s what we need as a community.
