What role do you play in education?
I am an Assistant Professor of Mathematical Sciences at USAFA and former high school math teacher
How long have you been in education?
10 years at USAFA & 3.5 years in GA high schools
Why do you think education is important?
It is the door to limitless opportunities
What do you love most about your role in education?
Engaging with energetic, bright, creative students and helping them achieve their highest potential
What is the best advice you have received about impacting the education sector?
Be open, flexible, and 100% committed to the well-being of all students
What do you think are the top 3 things that help create a healthy learning environment? Please Explain
- Genuinely caring about the well-being of students
- Maintaining high expectations/standards for all students AND provide support to help them reach those standards
- Helping students realize & maximize their strengths/talents/best modes of learning to be successful
What do you think is the most important quality in an educator? Please Explain
The ability to motivate students by making the learning environment relatable, relevant, and fun
What advice would you give to the younger generation about their education?
Work hard, seek out unique/cool opportunities, take creative risks, LEARN from failure & NEVER GIVE UP!!!
What encouragement would you give to those who are interested in being in education?
Learn your subject well & make it relatable
Be a life-long “out-of-the-box” learner
BE COMMITTED & LISTEN to all students
As a Black Person, what obstacles have you overcome, or are you overcoming to excel in education?
I’ve blown apart all negative myths designed to set the bar low for what I can achieve as a Black Woman! I have seized every opportunity put in front of me and sought out mentors of all types to help me.
Is there anything else you would like to share?
The sky is the limit if you are willing to work hard and daunted by flying high above what is expected of you!
