Celebrating Ingrid Phillips: A Beacon of Inspiration in Our Community

In our bustling community, stories of resilience and passion often go unnoticed, but one individual stands out—Ingrid Phillips. Nominated by an anonymous community member for her remarkable journey and unwavering commitment, Ingrid is a true testament to the power of perseverance and dedication.

Ingrid’s transformative story began in 2009 when she found herself at a crossroads, contemplating a return to her home state of Michigan. Struggling with the weight of personal challenges, including losing her house, job, and marriage, she took a fateful drive along Route 78. It was then that she spotted a freeway sign pointing her toward MiraCosta College. Little did she know, this decision would drastically change her life.

Upon arriving at MiraCosta College, Ingrid was welcomed by a supportive environment that made a profound difference in her life. She was encouraged by caring faculty and staff to pursue her education and take full advantage of the resources available. From counseling services to connecting with various scholarship opportunities, Ingrid embraced every aspect of her journey. Through tenacity and resilience, she earned an associate of arts degree and is now a full-time sociology major at California State University, San Marcos, with a minor in communications.

Ingrid’s academic achievements are nothing short of impressive. She has secured an astonishing $30,000 in scholarships since 2010, defying odds that would have stalled many. “Ingrid has overcome a lot of challenges and has never let any of that stop her,” says Diane Danielewicz, the Financial Aid/Scholarship specialist at MiraCosta College. “She’s an exceptional person.”

Today, Ingrid not only excels academically but also thrives in her professional role as the Career Studies and Services Coordinator at the Career Center, where she started as a student worker. Her journey through various positions within the department highlights her dedication to serving students, staff, and faculty alike.

Ingrid’s impact goes beyond her job title; she is an advocate for students, paving the way for their success through guidance and support. Her commitment extends to the role of Vice President in the Classified Senate, where she champions the interests of the community she holds dear. “The transformative impact of MiraCosta College, particularly the EOPS program, has been a positive force in my life,” says Ingrid. “It has given me the opportunity to give back.”

As Ingrid continues her educational pursuits, including aspirations to earn a master’s degree in counseling, she embodies the spirit of hope and determination. Her story is a powerful reminder that no challenge is insurmountable, and the journey toward success is often paved with both struggles and triumphs.

So, let’s celebrate Ingrid Phillips, a beacon of inspiration in our community. Her story encourages us all to strive for our goals, support one another, and embrace the journey of learning and growth.

Why Did You Start My Black City?

A MESSAGE FROM BRANDON BORNES (FOUNDER OF MY BLACK CITY)

We often worry that we don’t have enough resources in our community to go around. When we see someone in our community doing what we do but better, we get a little nervous or intimidated. Instead of using competition to spur on our creativity, teamwork, work ethic and innovation, we become soo overwhelmed with our own fears and insecurities that we gossip, sabotage, or hurt one another. This has happened to many exceptional people in our community. We need to do better and lead by example. Our love for each other needs to be greater than our fear of failure.

If we had to simplify into one word what My Black City is about, it would be LOVE! Because Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails.

When people come in contact with our brand, that’s what I want them to experience. It‘s not an easy aspiration to live up to, but we believe it‘s worth fighting for and it‘s what we need as a community.
