Celebrating Community Spirit: Felix Berry of Felix’s BBQ With Soul

Meet Felix Berry, an extraordinary figure in our local community known not just for his delicious BBQ but for the heart and soul he pours into everything he does. Nominated by an anonymous member of our community, Felix’s commitment to his craft and his unwavering dedication to kindness means he stands as a pillar for all of us, especially for our younger generations.

Felix’s BBQ With Soul, founded in 2008 amidst the chaos of a recession, captures the essence of passion, perseverance, and soul. It’s more than a restaurant; it’s a family. The southern-style menu reflects Felix’s roots and an unwavering commitment to quality that has defiantly thrived over the past ten years. His famous Catfish, Mac and Cheese, and Fried Chicken are not just meals; they are experiences filled with love and care. As Felix puts it perfectly, “BBQ is what we do. Soul Food is who we are.”

But Felix’s journey wasn’t always straightforward. From a young age, he cooked alongside his mother in Alabama, developing a deep understanding of the heart behind soul food. His very first job at just 12 years old as a busboy at Mitchell’s BBQ taught him not only the craft of BBQ but also an essential life lesson: “the flavor comes from the smoke.” After exploring various paths, including college football and restaurant management, his passion inevitably led him back to the kitchen, where he found his true calling.

At Felix’s BBQ, what’s truly remarkable is the culture that Felix has cultivated. He believes that the restaurant isn’t just a place to eat, but a “platform disguised as a restaurant.” His mission is not only to serve great food but to uplift and support his staff, encouraging them to grow and find happiness in their everyday lives. “Without the passion of your team, success is limited,” he asserts, emphasizing the importance of nurturing talent and joy within the team.

But Felix’s impact reaches beyond the walls of his restaurant. His businesses have made significant contributions to the community, supporting organizations like the Women’s Resource Center and local schools. He continues to prioritize giving back, showcasing that true success is not only about thriving financially but also about uplifting those around you.

The locals can’t get enough of Felix’s culinary creations, with regulars raving about the juicy ribs, fried catfish, and comforting cornbread muffins. It’s no wonder why Felix’s BBQ continues to draw in passionate food lovers from all over, proving that even during tough times, heart and soul can create something incredible.

As we celebrate Felix Berry, we recognize someone who embodies the spirit of our community. He serves not just food, but inspiration. As Felix continues to grow his business and give back in remarkable ways, the future shines bright for Felix’s BBQ With Soul. For all of you middle and high schoolers out there, remember Felix’s journey is a testament that with passion and community at the heart, anything is possible!

Why Did You Start My Black City?

A MESSAGE FROM BRANDON BORNES (FOUNDER OF MY BLACK CITY)

We often worry that we don’t have enough resources in our community to go around. When we see someone in our community doing what we do but better, we get a little nervous or intimidated. Instead of using competition to spur on our creativity, teamwork, work ethic and innovation, we become soo overwhelmed with our own fears and insecurities that we gossip, sabotage, or hurt one another. This has happened to many exceptional people in our community. We need to do better and lead by example. Our love for each other needs to be greater than our fear of failure.

If we had to simplify into one word what My Black City is about, it would be LOVE! Because Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails.

When people come in contact with our brand, that’s what I want them to experience. It‘s not an easy aspiration to live up to, but we believe it‘s worth fighting for and it‘s what we need as a community.
