Celebrating Community Trailblazer: Elaine Swann
Born into a family of five siblings, Elaine’s passion for etiquette blossomed early in childhood. With her mother encouraging her by assigning the important task of setting the dinner table and eventually enrolling her in charm school, Elaine learned the fundamental skills that would shape her future. Her high school experience in beauty pageants further refined her understanding of etiquette, culminating in a career that would take her from the runway to the world stage.
Elaine’s journey took her to New York City, where she established E.P. Models, a company representing petite models. She later returned to California to open her own beauty salon and work in creative roles for magazines, but it was her stint as a flight attendant for Continental Airlines that proved transformative. This position equipped her with international training in cultural protocols, a foundation that set the stage for her etiquette instruction career.
Her pivotal moment came when she was invited to develop an etiquette program for a middle school, recognizing her potential to make a significant impact on young lives. This connection affirmed her purpose, leading Elaine to establish The Swann School of Protocol, which now includes 17 independently operated schools throughout the United States, empowering agents of change in their communities.
Beyond her professional achievements, Elaine is a devoted community member. She actively volunteers with organizations such as Milestone House, providing etiquette workshops for at-risk girls, and serves on the Board of Directors for Girls Inc., inspiring young women to embrace their strengths. Her recognition as the NAACP Woman of the Year in 2013 and her nomination for San Diego Magazine’s “Woman of the Year” in 2012 highlight her commitment to uplift those around her.
Elaine’s influence is further amplified through her various media appearances, marking her presence on platforms ranging from the TODAY Show to CNN. Her book, *Let Crazy Be Crazy*, continues to resonate with audiences, solidifying her status as a thought leader in the etiquette domain.
As we celebrate Elaine Swann, we honor her exceptional contributions to our community and the profound impact she has on young minds. Her story encourages us all—especially our middle and high schoolers—to embrace our passions, cultivate kindness, and understand the timeless importance of etiquette in forging meaningful connections.
