Celebrating Edwina Williams: A Beacon of Hope for Our Community

Oceanside is home to many inspiring individuals, but few shine as brightly as Edwina Williams. Nominated by an anonymous community member, Edwina’s journey from high school dropout to a respected educator is a powerful testament to resilience and determination, and she is a living example of how dreams can indeed come true.

Once a single mother who faced significant challenges after becoming pregnant and dropping out of high school, Edwina was determined not to become just another statistic. “I felt incomplete,” she recalls, reflecting on her past. It was this very feeling that pushed her to enroll in the Adult High School Program at MiraCosta College, where she began her remarkable transformation. Edwina earned her high school diploma just two years later, marking the first step in a series of academic achievements that included not one, but two additional degrees.

Edwina’s academic journey is nothing short of extraordinary. After earning her associate degree in psychology from MiraCosta College, she proceeded to Cal State San Marcos, where she received her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in related fields. Today, she stands as a part-time sociology instructor at MiraCosta College, passionately teaching courses that illuminate the lives of her students. Her ultimate goal is to become a full-time professor, and she is currently pursuing her Ph.D.

“I never thought I would ever be in a college class, let alone teach one,” she admitted. “But now, I’m living happily ever after.” Her story, filled with adversity and triumph, inspires her students and community alike.

Edwina is not just an educator; she is a mentor and a community leader. In her efforts to further empower youth, she founded Project LIKE (Literacy is Knowledge Empowerment), a nonprofit that connects students with local organizations where they can volunteer and gain valuable experience. Through this initiative, approximately 40 students each semester engage in community service, learning diverse perspectives and gaining insight into different cultures. Edwina’s commitment to enriching the lives of her students is evident in every word she speaks.

“I am so proud of my students. They are learning about different cultures and meeting people who speak different languages,” Edwina stated passionately. Her belief that education should align with real-world challenges drives her efforts, making her a beloved figure among her students.

Beyond the classroom, Edwina’s influence extends to the community through various projects aimed at combating social issues. For example, she received grants to fund health literacy programs, ensuring that her students can provide assistance to those in need. Her dedication and hard work have not gone unnoticed, and community members cannot help but admire her commitment to creating a positive change.

“Edwina is a person I can say I’m honored to know,” said Diane Danielewicz, highlighting the admiration many have for this powerhouse of positivity. “She continues to be an inspiration.”

As Edwina reflects on her journey, she emphasizes that her path is ongoing. “I don’t feel like my journey is over, but I’m definitely on the right path.” By sharing her story, she hopes to empower the next generation, proving that with passion and determination, anything is possible. We celebrate Edwina Williams, a true hero in our community.

Why Did You Start My Black City?

A MESSAGE FROM BRANDON BORNES (FOUNDER OF MY BLACK CITY)

We often worry that we don’t have enough resources in our community to go around. When we see someone in our community doing what we do but better, we get a little nervous or intimidated. Instead of using competition to spur on our creativity, teamwork, work ethic and innovation, we become soo overwhelmed with our own fears and insecurities that we gossip, sabotage, or hurt one another. This has happened to many exceptional people in our community. We need to do better and lead by example. Our love for each other needs to be greater than our fear of failure.

If we had to simplify into one word what My Black City is about, it would be LOVE! Because Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails.

When people come in contact with our brand, that’s what I want them to experience. It‘s not an easy aspiration to live up to, but we believe it‘s worth fighting for and it‘s what we need as a community.
