Celebrating Dr. LaWana Richmond: Pioneering a Brighter Future

In a world where dreams can sometimes feel out of reach, Dr. LaWana Richmond stands as a beacon of inspiration for young people in her community. As a global influencer in the Black Speculative Arts Movement (BSAM) and an active participant in the Afrofuturism movement, Dr. Richmond is who many look to for guidance and empowerment.

Her journey began back in 1989 when she started community organizing. By 2018, she was hosting groundbreaking programs and events focused on Afrofuturism, paving the way for new voices in speculative fiction and art. Through her dedication and passion, she has become a leader, transforming not only her own life but also the lives of countless others around her.

Dr. Richmond possesses an impressive educational background, equipped with degrees in business, information systems, and educational leadership. Her certifications in project management and change management enhance her ability to push boundaries and challenge norms. She embraces her roles as both teacher and student, embodying her belief that “when the student is ready, the teacher will appear.” This mantra resonates with youth as they navigate their paths.

One of her greatest joys lies in witnessing the lightbulb moments—the sparks of understanding that ignite within others. “Creating additional leaders is what it’s all about,” she says, emphasizing the importance of building relationships and fostering learning. Dr. Richmond encourages students to stay present, ask questions, and dive deep into research to better connect with the industry and community that inspires them.

Resilience plays a crucial role in Dr. Richmond’s story. Overcoming a challenging childhood, she became a single mother at a young age while juggling college life. Instead of being sidelined by adversity, she transformed it into fuel for her ambitions, leading to her remarkable successes. “My children are brilliant and capable people with good hearts,” she proudly shares, celebrating both her personal and professional achievements.

To young people eager to carve their own paths, Dr. Richmond offers sage advice: “Be patient with your elders, and learn the difference between elders and people who are just old.” This counsel is vital as the younger generation shapes future narratives. She hopes to instill in them a deep love of self and community—encouraging them to leave the world better than they found it.

Dr. Richmond’s dedication to the arts and her tireless advocacy for representation and imagination assures us that she will leave a lasting legacy. As we celebrate her contributions, let us reflect on what we can do to uplift our own communities and dream boldly.

Dr. LaWana Richmond is a testament to the power of tenacity, vision, and community. As she continues to influence the Black Speculative Arts Movement and beyond, she defines success not just by achievements but by the lives she has touched along the way.

Why Did You Start My Black City?

A MESSAGE FROM BRANDON BORNES (FOUNDER OF MY BLACK CITY)

We often worry that we don’t have enough resources in our community to go around. When we see someone in our community doing what we do but better, we get a little nervous or intimidated. Instead of using competition to spur on our creativity, teamwork, work ethic and innovation, we become soo overwhelmed with our own fears and insecurities that we gossip, sabotage, or hurt one another. This has happened to many exceptional people in our community. We need to do better and lead by example. Our love for each other needs to be greater than our fear of failure.

If we had to simplify into one word what My Black City is about, it would be LOVE! Because Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails.

When people come in contact with our brand, that’s what I want them to experience. It‘s not an easy aspiration to live up to, but we believe it‘s worth fighting for and it‘s what we need as a community.
