Meet the Designer: Dominique F

In our vibrant community, where creativity meets passion, one name resonates particularly well among aspiring artists and fashion enthusiasts: Dominique F. Nominated by an anonymous community member, Dominique is making waves as a Luxury Fashion Designer, specializing in custom bespoke pieces that empower individuals to embrace their unique stories. Dominique’s journey started in the 6th grade during a home-ec class—a choice born out of love for creativity and a desire to master various skills. “I chose sewing because it called to me. My first project was a watermelon-shaped pillow that was a major challenge, but it lit a spark within me,” Dominique recalls. That spark transformed into a lifelong pursuit, leading her to hone her craft over 25 years and inspiring her to blend art with heart. Her creations celebrate individuality and defy conventional fashion norms. Dominique’s desire to create garments that make people feel empowered stems from her own experiences—struggling to find pieces that excite and inspire. “Have you ever tried to pick an outfit and only found your favorite worn-in T-shirt or cute pants? I want my clients to feel that excitement every time they open their closet,” she explains enthusiastically. Her pieces embody the spirit of ‘the weird and extra,’ transforming bold ideas into wearable art that helps her clients express their true selves. But Dominique is not just focused on her business; she’s on a mission to uplift the community around her. Recognizing the dwindling arts programs in schools, she holds a free sewing class on the first Saturday of each month, providing critical skills to youth in the area. “I want to empower kids to turn their mistakes into design elements,” she shares, emphasizing the importance of creativity and self-expression. Her future vision? A self-sustainable hub offering education, networking, and wellness opportunities—a creative space where talents are nurtured, celebrated, and passed down. “It’s an ambitious dream, but I am dedicated to lifting our community alongside me. I want every participant to feel valued and inspired,” Dominique expresses confidently. Beyond her impact inside the studio, Dominique’s work in fashion photography and collaboration with other talented artists has been instrumental in her own creative growth. She cherishes the support from her family, best friend, and fellow designers, who consistently motivate her to reach new heights. “Each person helps shape my journey,” she acknowledges with gratitude. When asked about her favorite local spots, she recommends soaking up the sun at the beach, savoring delicious food at Tahini, and even skydiving for an adrenaline rush! Dominique’s colorful personality and adventurous spirit truly embody the essence of our community. In an era where self-expression is vital, Dominique F stands out as a beacon of creativity, resilience, and love for the arts. Her journey encourages the youth in our community to embrace their passions, explore their identities, and never underestimate the power of a single stitch. Why Did You Start My Black City?

A MESSAGE FROM BRANDON BORNES (FOUNDER OF MY BLACK CITY)

We often worry that we don’t have enough resources in our community to go around. When we see someone in our community doing what we do but better, we get a little nervous or intimidated. Instead of using competition to spur on our creativity, teamwork, work ethic and innovation, we become soo overwhelmed with our own fears and insecurities that we gossip, sabotage, or hurt one another. This has happened to many exceptional people in our community. We need to do better and lead by example. Our love for each other needs to be greater than our fear of failure.

If we had to simplify into one word what My Black City is about, it would be LOVE! Because Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails.

When people come in contact with our brand, that’s what I want them to experience. It‘s not an easy aspiration to live up to, but we believe it‘s worth fighting for and it‘s what we need as a community.
