Born and raised in our local community, Deon has always been driven by his values—God, family, and friends. His profound beliefs shape his daily actions and aspirations. With four years of service in the Marine Corps, Deon learned the importance of discipline and teamwork. These qualities have served him well in his real estate ventures, where he strives to mentor and empower others to acquire financial literacy and succeed in life. As a pivotal member of the Young Black and In Business organization, Deon enthusiastically shares his knowledge about time and money management strategies that can pave the way for financial independence. “I believe in teaching others how to build generational wealth,” he explains. “It’s not just about making money; it’s about creating a legacy that can last long after we’re gone.” In the real estate industry, Deon plays an essential role as a leader and teacher. He invests countless hours in educating others about the opportunities that lie within property ownership and investment. By facilitating workshops and mentoring young adults, he has been instrumental in changing the trajectory of many lives in our community. Despite his professional success, Deon remains grounded. “I’m proud of my achievements, but my greatest joy comes from giving back,” he says. He emphasizes the need to develop support systems for underserved communities, an area he believes deserves more attention. “We can’t overlook those who struggle,” he adds, his passion evident. “Supporting each other is vital for community growth.” As Deon continues on his journey, he seeks to improve his time management skills, balancing his roles as a parent and spouse while serving the community. His vision for the future is simple yet impactful: to nurture a generation that values education, hard work, and strong family ties. For young people in high school and middle school, Deon is a remarkable role model. He encourages them to get involved, learn about finances, and pursue careers that resonate with their passions. In his view, the sky is the limit: “You can achieve anything you set your mind to, as long as you’re willing to put in the work.” Deon Westbrook’s drive to make a difference in his community is an inspiring reminder that everyone has the power to create change. Why Did You Start My Black City?

A MESSAGE FROM BRANDON BORNES (FOUNDER OF MY BLACK CITY)

We often worry that we don’t have enough resources in our community to go around. When we see someone in our community doing what we do but better, we get a little nervous or intimidated. Instead of using competition to spur on our creativity, teamwork, work ethic and innovation, we become soo overwhelmed with our own fears and insecurities that we gossip, sabotage, or hurt one another. This has happened to many exceptional people in our community. We need to do better and lead by example. Our love for each other needs to be greater than our fear of failure.

If we had to simplify into one word what My Black City is about, it would be LOVE! Because Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails.

When people come in contact with our brand, that’s what I want them to experience. It‘s not an easy aspiration to live up to, but we believe it‘s worth fighting for and it‘s what we need as a community.
